Template/Product preferences
[edit]¨ The nucleic acid polymerisation reaction is catalysed by a wide variety of enzymes that can be classified into two major mechanistic categories: template dependent (that need an existing polymer to use as a basis for catalysis of a new strand) and template independent (that can polymerase nucleic acids without the need for a pre-existing strand) nucleotidyl transferases.
The group of template dependent polymerases refers to enzymes that use a nucleic acid template to produce a new RNA or DNA molecule, and are classified according to template/product preferences:
(i) DNA-dependent DNA polymerases (DdDPs) (ii) DNA-dependent RNA polymerases (DdRPs) (iii) RNA-dependent DNA polymerases (RdDPs), also known as reverse transcriptases (RT) (iv) RNA-dependent RNA polymerases (RdRPs)¨

I was thinking of adding information regarding the different requirements for nucleic acid template used and products produced by different polymerases (or nucleotydil transferases), along the lines of the previous text. And then also create an entry for each category, of course.
Production of other biopolymers
[edit]- "It is an accident of history that the enzymes responsible for the catalytic production of other biopolymers are not also referred to as polymerases."
Not also referred to as? What did the author mean by this sentence? Are they or are they not referred to as polymerase? Redtails (talk) 18:34, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Unknown. The statement does not make logical sense and is un-cited. Removing.Bluelightnight (talk) 08:53, 16 January 2016 (UTC)
polymerase as the ancestor of life
[edit]rare forms of lab made polymerase are able to create RNA and DNA not via cloning but from fundamental components — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:587:4109:4C00:1819:DEC2:D0BC:9571 (talk) 21:42, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
