[edit]

All references I see to him spell his last name "McDonough", I did redirect to this page from that spelling, not sure which is canonical Jolomo 00:47, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The DANFS uses Macdonough, as do the Navy ships named after him. See [1] for a bio that says he changed his name prior to entering the Navy, "for unknown reasons". Here are some other references which use the "mac" spelling [2], [3], [4]. Finally, this page shows his signature using the mac spelling.
If you'd like, no objections to adding that his father's name was spelled "McDonough" and that he changed it. Jinian 04:01, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Article is a cut and paste job

[edit]

This article looks to be entirely copied from the Delaware Military History web site. It has been this way since at least 2008. (!) I will begin rewriting the article and supplying RS for cites, which the page is lacking. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 23:08, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of Name

[edit]

The name 'Macdonough' is sometimes spelled as 'MacDonough', using an upper-case 'D'. Since almost all the reliable sources spell the name with a lower-case 'd', the name will also be spelled this way in this biography. Gwillhickers (talk) 21:56, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For the record: The biography of Macdonough, Life of Commodore Thomas Macdonough, written by his brother Rodney, also spells 'Macdonough' using loewr-case 'd'. - Gwillhickers (talk) 16:00, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ref format

[edit]

I returned the ref's to their original format. Listing page numbers next to a ref number in among the text is confusing. Page numbers belong next to author and/or title name in ref section, which is the standard used in history articles. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 21:30, 30 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
