Squads as of which date?

[edit]

What is the date we should use in determining club? Transfer window opens 1 June and some players will be changing clubs on that date. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 14:37, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The first match of the tournament makes most sense to me. That's what all the other information refers to (e.g. head coach and caps). The transfer window doesn't open on 1 June in all countries by the way. mgSH 14:45, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Since the rosters must be submitted by 29 May 2012, make that the cut-off date. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 15:04, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Previous tournaments have used the start of the tournament (pre-match on 8 June) as the cut-off, so I think it makes sense to go with that, especially as some sides have friendlies between 29 May and the tournament. mgSH 17:03, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Have seen that and will go with what has been done in the past. Should we display that somewhere to avoid the possible back-and-forth? --Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:45, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly in the meantime, but I don't know how. I imagine the dated note at the top of the page will suffice once the tournament has begun, but something that makes that clarification could be useful anyway. mgSH 19:03, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We would create an edit notice here. It may require an admin to create it. Would you mind creating the copy for it? --Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:10, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what the standard for creating one of those is and think we can probably manage without, so I'll leave you to it if you deem it necessary, is that's okay. mgSH 11:17, 8 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Germany player positions

[edit]

Since dfb.de lists Th. Müller and Podolski as midfielders (not as forwards), shouldn't they be treated accordingly in this article? --Prof. Heizer (talk) 10:08, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Must use the sources. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 13:57, 9 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Oh mir fuckin' god Podolski plays always as Left attacking midfielder in german national team, why he is listed as Foward? You have echt no Ahnung from gar nix. -.- too stupid to shit --84.137.51.47 (talk) 18:48, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain - forwards or midfielders?

[edit]

There seems to be a bit of confusion in the 'England' section about whether Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are midfield players or forwards. They're both very similar players, and the little abbreviation for both says 'FW' (i.e. forward), yet Walcott is listed as an attacker and Oxlade-Chamberlain as a midfielder. Obviously, they're wingers, so I would suggest that in modern tactical discourse, they are attackers but is that the consensus on the subject or not? Just wondering. Thanks, PamukSoundystem (talk) 18:33, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Similar players? I think most would disagree. Anyway, the source for England's squad (The FA's website) lists both as midfielders, so they should be treated as such on this page. mgSH 21:37, 16 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Protected

[edit]

Now that this article has been protected until 17 June 2012 to keep it from well-meaning anonymous editors, could we have someone verify the rosters for correctness? I suspect that there will be a great many requests for changes as well. If you are requesting a change to this article please recognise that the rosters are based on the submitted references. Player positions are based on the positions that that national team has assigned the players, not the positions that they play for their home clubs. Also, the order is first by position (keeper, backfield, midfield, forwards) and then caps. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 18:37, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do Groups A and B, if you do C and D? mgSH 21:08, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's my half done. Whoever ends up doing it shouldn't forget to remove unsourced squad numbers. mgSH 22:24, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Netherlands

[edit]

Robben is a forward (not a midfielder) and Schaars is a midfielder (not a defender). Can someone with a registered account kind enough to correct their positions? Thanks. 125.161.247.198 (talk) 06:10, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done. mgSH 07:37, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Schaars is indeed a Midfielder, however he's been called up for this campaign as a defender. [1]
"Pieters’ absence will force midfielder Stijn Schaars into the left back role. The 28-year-old Dutchman has welcomed the challenge." LindaSportGirl (talk) 18:51, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Markus Rosenberg

[edit]

Markus Rosenberg (Sweden) should be listed as a player of Werder Bremen instead of free agent, since his contract does not expire until 30 June 2012 and other players with expiring contracts (eg Sebastian Boenisch, Khalid Boulahrouz) are listed as players of their current clubs. — Preceding unsigned comment added by M zu dem U (talkcontribs) 07:00, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish (and portuguese) names

[edit]

Why everyone has the whole name, except some of the spanish and portuguese players? The three spanish players I talk use their first name because they have extremely common surnames, but they should have their whole name in a list. They are Xavi Hernandez, Pedro Rodriguez and Juanfran Torres. Same thing for some of the portuguese names, so a portuguese guy should suggest how to put it properly. Thanks.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Txabs77 (talkcontribs) 15:54, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Probably because of WP:COMMONNAME and these are the common uses of their names in English. While that applies to article titles it is commonly used for names in articles. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:06, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The common use of the name of English players is only the surname, and they appear with their full name. But specially Juanfran is important, because another different Juanfran (Garcia), played the 2002 World Cup, and in the 2002 WC squad article is listed as Juanfran too, and they both play as right defenders for Atl. Madrid, and it could drive to mistake. This one is Juanfran Torres. Xavi and Pedro are usually referred in spanish media as Xavi Hernandez and Pedro Rodriguez, specially since Xabi (alonso) get to Real, to distinguish them Txabs77 (talk
As has been mentioned, in the English media and in everyday life, you'll only ever see it as Xavi. Xavi Hernández? Never or very rarely. Given that this is an English-speaking encyclopaedia, I don't think the Spanish media is too relevant. mgSH 17:13, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The English media also refer English players by their surnames only and it doesn't stop it to write them properly. And given that English is international speaking language, I assumed this article is not only for English speaking countries, but for everyone. http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/season=2012/teams/team=122/squad/index.html http://rfef.es/index.jsp?nodo=39&ID=5152 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Txabs77 (talkcontribs) 07:48, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is common to use family names. It is uncommon to use given name only and so when it happens there is generally a good reason for it. Sobriquets and nicknames are are also frequently used in sports media however we don't use them. COMMONNAME is the key here. --Walter Görlitz (talk) 13:18, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I dont want to bore you guys, but just try to type Pedro or Juanfran on the search box (You're right with Xavi in English, not in Spanish). We have at least 4 football players named Pedro (only one in La Liga now, plus one in Belgium and two in second division), and two Juanfran (both in la Liga, both in Spain national team). If an encyclopedia cannot be ambiguous, I cant understand why so many problems just to call them as Spanish Federation or UEFA do. Thank you for your attention. Txabs — Preceding unsigned comment added by Txabs77 (talkcontribs) 10:18, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please change them then. It's not hugely important to me either way and I was mainly aiming for consistency with older articles in truth. mgSH 21:37, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what happened, but when editing the article you can see the number of goals scored, but when checking the article they are not visible. I'm not long enough on Wikipedia to find out what went wrong here, to solve the issue. LindaSportGirl (talk) 21:11, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please check the appearance number of Werder Bremen which should be 4 instead as 3.

Also could you please check the appearance of Birmingham City and West Ham United which should appear as 1. And PSV has 7 players in the EURO 2012 (all listed in the selection tables), but is in the table at 6 players. Players should be listed as representing the team they played for last season, not their recent transfer

[edit]

Every club receives 270,000 Euros for each player they have participating in the tournament, so here is my issue, Dirk Kuyt is listed as a Fenerbahce player with the Netherlands, however he was called up as a Liverpool player, and Liverpool are the club which will be entitled to the money not Fenerbahce, I think the squads on the actual Wikipedia pages should be updated to represent their current club, but this list should stay true to where the players were last season. Dirk Kuyt was a Liverpool player when the squad was announced. Lasse Schone from Denmark is a good example of this, he transfered to AFC Ajax at the beginning of this month, however he is rightfully listed as an NEC Nijmegen player in this list, because they are the club who will be getting compensated for the player and not Ajax. That is also where he played at the end of the 2011/12 season. I'm sure there are other players with this issue in the list, but these were the two I noticed and felt compelled to bring attention to.

Club count wrong

[edit]

Someone may need to redo the club count, I can't as I don't have an account. Liverpool are listed as having 8 players but they have 9.

This is because in the club count Kuyt is already listed as a Fenerbahce player, even though he only signed for them and still did not play for them. Fenerbahce should be removed from the list and Liverpool's number of players should be fixed to 9.Celtic1985 (talk) 16:12, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Caps and Goals

[edit]

The appearances and goals shouldn't be only up to 8 June? Someone his updating with the Euro 2012 caps and goals. For instance: Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo on 8 June had 90 caps and 32 goals. As of today, 19 June, he has 93 and 34.

I think it should be kept before Euro commences (8 June). Demon Witch (talk) 11:04, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The article says "Caps and goals correct as of 18 June 2012", but a user has been updating without updating that statement. Will we be updating this page every time a player gets another cap or another goal in the next 10 years? I think we should freeze the numbers at the pre tournament levels. Nczempin (talk) 08:42, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The article is turned into a complete mess. Figures should remain frozen with the starting date of the tournament. Somoene has updated the caps and the scored goals gradually with the tournament.--Preacher lad (talk) 10:13, 15 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
