Several acts of terrorism have been planned and conducted in Italy. The country has also been used as a transit point for acts of terrorism that were planned or executed elsewhere.
Attacks and foiled attacks in Italy[edit]
- Islamist plots to attack the Vatican
- 1973 Rome airport attacks and hijacking
- 1982 Great Synagogue of Rome attack
- 1985 Rome and Vienna airport attacks
Role as a transit point[edit]
Italy has served terrorists as an available and relatively unguarded route into and out of member states of the European Union.[1]
One of the attackers in the June 2017 London attack was an Italian citizen, born to an Italian mother and a Moroccan father. In 2016 Italian security officers preventing him from boarding a flight to Istanbul found ISIS propaganda in his pocket.[2] The perpetrator of the 2016 Berlin attack had entered the European Union via Italy and had fled to Italy after the attack.[3]
