Quarrymen

[edit]

Alright Our Kid? Have you any idea why Sooty is listed as a member of The Quarrymen? They would have bin Johnny and The Moondoddies then surely? Cheers pal, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:01, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. They went through a few names then, but I'll have a look. I'm doing Julia Baird at the moment, even though I don't really want to, but there's nobody else left to do... Hold on, I could do one about Lennon's cats in England and New York couldn't I? NOT... :) --andreasegde (talk) 18:34, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. "Sutcliffe booking concerts for "The Silver Beetles", as they were then known, which was Lennon, McCartney and Sutcliffe.[17]". Feel free to try and beat me to the Quarry's page to delete his name. On yer marks, ready, set GO... --andreasegde (talk) 18:36, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Faster than a speeding bullet... (I wish) --andreasegde (talk) 18:42, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yer beat me easy, I was busy, (being driven mental by the twins!) Nice one kidda!! Cheers la, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:45, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He's also in The Quarry's in The Beatles article, but this time with a source??? Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:55, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll look all that up, but it was a confusing time for names. BTW, tell the twins to behave, or the big bad penguin will knock on the door. (Nah, that won't work, they've probably seen "Happy Feet". :) --andreasegde (talk) 19:42, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This makes it clear. --andreasegde (talk) 20:26, 9 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, Long time ago I was wondering where that little devil is meself. Thanks for sorting that out, "Mr. Beatle" goes off to other articles an see what happens? It all goes tits up! you should get paid by Jimbo! I don't think they've seen Happy Feet, they're not that keen on penquins, Pops likes lions (feckin Chelski) an Sammie likes those 'orrible little Brat thingies! Cheers Pal, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 00:10, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mr. Beatle? Moi? Maybe, Mr. The Beatles (ouch...) I'm a bit bored on that Daniel Dunglas Home article, BTW. All that "watched Home rise to the ceiling" stuff is making me feel seasick :) I wouldn't advise watching the Happy Feet film - it's very, very silly, and hardly funny at all (Robin Williams as a Mexican penguin? Do me a lemon...) --andreasegde (talk) 08:25, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Understood Mr. The Beatles - Robin Williams (Mork the Dork) is dire enough as Robin Williams! cheers la, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 17:10, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You may have seen this, if not it'll crack you up! [1] Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:20, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I saw it a long time ago, and it is funny. It was interesting to watch their faces. IMO, they looked a little in awe of Mr. Dodd, and not sure how far to go.--andreasegde (talk) 19:51, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, what is that tosh on the Youtube page about the fabs asking Gay Byrne to become their manager? I replied to it in a cool, succint, and what a tosser kind of way... :) --andreasegde (talk) 20:50, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah good reply our kid! What a tosser, manage The Fabs? In his dreams! I like the post that says that Doddy isn't as funny as Benny Hill - I bet they spend a lot of time on bigtits.com!! LOL! Cheers la, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 22:05, 11 January 2008 (UTC) Btw, seeing again, even Lemon isn't pushing his luck! Your'e right, they are a little bit in awe of Doddy. Little George looks terrified! Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 22:23, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And a bit pissed off because Dodd called him John. Whoops... The questions about their Mums and Dads was a bit touchy as well. I was watching Lennon and McCartney closely, but they didn't show much. --andreasegde (talk) 22:34, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think he called him John on purpose, he's got a memory like a computer that one! Yeah shame about their Mams; every Scouser assumes that everyone still has their Mam she's the real backbone of the family. Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 22:42, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Laugh? Ringo's just bin on the news-he's tryin to speak like a Yank!!!! Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 22:48, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bugger, you get all those channels, and I get BBC Prime (repeat, repeat, repeat) and CNN (the war, the elections, the war, the elections...) Bugger, bugger, bugger... --andreasegde (talk) 00:47, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah-hah, a German! A warm hello from a Brit in Linz, Austria. --andreasegde (talk) 21:31, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I got it wrong! I had guessed you were an Austrian abroad. In that case, greetings to Linz! See also e.g. Category:Wikipedians in Austria or Category:Wikipedians in Germany. There are quite a few. As to my own name: I have a feeling that I'm too eager proposing a lot of stuff, sometimes without properly thinking it through beforehand. And since User:Village idiot was already in use, I went with the fancy German word. User:Dorftrottel 21:43, January 11, 2008

Pre-emptive

[edit]

Before anyone feels the need to slap my wrists for pointing out that Mimi Smith and Julia Lennon are up for deletion on certain editor's pages and the project page, I will say this: I only placed a link to the discussion page concerned, as editors may not have looked at the articles for a long time, and I did not make any remarks concerning my own feelings whatsoever, although I did leave a reply on the deletion discussion page. I thank you. --andreasegde (talk) 18:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Time-wasters/trouble-makers

[edit]

After reading the comments from some Delete users on the Mimi Smith and Julia Lennon deletion discussion page, I have come to the conclusion that there are troublemakers in Wiki who just like hang around AfD pages causing trouble. One complainer has worked on The Green (Dartmouth College), which is "a grass-covered field and common space", and another created a stub called Bermudian English (which only just survived an AfD). Why do they do it? --andreasegde (talk) 14:04, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Green has been the subject of numerous reliable sources as well as having received significant treatment in other, broader sources; one my primary objections to Mimi Smith and Julia Lennon was that neither person was actually the primary subject of such sources, which is a basic criterion at WP:BIO. Regarding The Green, concerns over its notability were hashed out at length at its successful Featured Article nomination and were only brought up by one user, against numerous others who voted to promote the article. At any rate, notability is a very difficult thing to compare from one instance to another, particularly across such wide-ranging subjects as a grass field to a biography. To say it's like comparing apples and oranges is an understatement.
Nevertheless, I can certainly appreciate your frustration at this apparent contradiction. Notability comes in many levels, and I am the first to admit that The Green (Dartmouth College) does not sit alongside Plato and George W. Bush in notability. It's in a grey area, but I think it falls on the correct side of the line. Regarding Mimi Smith and Julia Lennon, it should hopefully be some consolation that the majority of commenters so far agree with you and these articles are extremely unlikely to be deleted at this point. I don't think those articles are notable, but the consensus seems firmly against me. The idea behind the AfD process is not to burn bridges and create hostilities but to open up a discussion. In terms of "sides", mine will lose in this instance, but I'm nevertheless grateful for the opportunity to have traded good-faith arguments with other editors and to have heard other points of view.
I do not appreciate the fact that you are calling me a "trouble-maker", a "time-waster", and a "complainer". Calling me as such is not assuming good faith. I nominated those articles for deletion because I thought doing so would help this project. I also consider those names personal attacks and a violation of civility (particularly this, which you changed to a slightly less mocking comment), which are by Wikipedia policy to be avoided at all costs. I have no problem with you holding a different point of view than me, but it is always best to argue the issue, not the person. Let's discuss this AfD sensibly rather than reducing it to name-calling and grumbling. Dylan (talk) 14:58, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Writing "Notable? Don't make me laugh..." (which I changed, as you noticed) is not a personal attack, as you are not mentioned by name, but the articles are. I defend my position by referring you to the 141 (to date) articles about the college I presume you attend or have attended, or hold in great esteem. Are they all notable? There is a phrase about one's own back yard that would suffice.
It would have been better for you to mention your proposed deletion on The Beatles project page first to assess the feeling there. Relatives of the group and their notability have been mentioned there recently, BTW. I stand by my time-wasting comment, as this AfD will do nothing more than divert attention away from other articles that one could be working on, as is writing answers like these. --andreasegde (talk) 15:20, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was a sarcastic jab meant to attack an alleged hypocrisy on my part and the part of Paularblaster for expressing a different opinion than you. It was most certainly not civil and is not the kind of behavior that is expected on Wikipedia. The issue here is not what articles I choose to edit. If you take anything away from this, just please know that whether or not you considered them as such, I found your comments insulting and in poor faith and taste. In the future, please consider this, and be a bit more friendly when interacting with other editors. Dylan (talk) 20:20, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But you can't get me on a personal attack, can you? I suggest that you go back to your 141 favourite college articles (including lawns/playgrounds and walkways) and stop disrupting the work of others. Some people just waste time attacking other people's work because they feel something lacking in their own. I wish they would go away. --andreasegde (talk) 23:28, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Love Me Do single, with bongo on drums?

[edit]

Some one left a note on the Pete Best page yesterday saying that Bongo is playing drums, the article for the single states the same. Now I've just Played and recorded the Red label first pressing, an the Black label and I can't hear any difference between the two, (I've listened to both 6 times!) As a skin basher yerself, whatyer reckon la? Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:18, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I left a nice note on his/her page asking for a ref. As for guessing which one is playing - I have no idea. I'd have to listen to all the versions through good speakers (such as my lovely Genelecs) and even then it would be hard. It isn't a track featuring much percussive style or fills. After all, I was only a drummer who used to hang out with musicians (Ahhh...) :)) --andreasegde (talk) 18:26, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blimey oh crikey! They're right!! Just checked "Record Collector: "Love Me Do/PS I Love You" Ringo on drums & no tamborine version; with or without "Made in Great Britain" credit; in sleeve type A B or C. Parlophone 45-R 4983 Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:39, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh goodness gracious me, my chapati chum, you'll have to get over there and fix it. I'm off to an English quiz night at the local Irish pub (thoughts of India and playing billiards, pontoon, drinking sherry and talking about the old country with ancient ex-pats in the officers club, don't-cha know. :) --andreasegde (talk) 18:45, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jolly good show, say hello to all the chaps for me 'ol bean! Lt Gonville (volley fire at 100 yards) Bromhead VC 19:14, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the info is in Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide 2008, Diamond Publishing, page 99. Cheers! If you actually own two pressings of the single, you can check the matrix number stamped within the run-off groove of the side - if both have the same suffix (-1N) then they are the same. 217.155.20.163 (talk) 21:31, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that! I was using the 2004 copy. I can't check the matrix numbers - I'm on duty! But I think your'e right, the red and the black label don't have tambourine, so they must be the same. Well done, and thanks for your help! All the best, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 22:37, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

What a wonderful thing you created! (BTW, "automaticly checked" needs to be corrected...) I thank you again - it really helps. --andreasegde (talk) 17:55, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Corrected that. Thanks. —Dispenser (talk) 22:24, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This editor, Dispenser, is a genius, because he has changed something important, which is the true meaning of genius. --andreasegde (talk) 23:31, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Archive

[edit]

Anything that has been archived will not be read again. It is considered to be dead. So naturally, I expect someone to ignore this, as is their wont... :) --andreasegde (talk) 23:42, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not true. I can spend hours reading other people's archives. Can be so... illuminating. Well, not really. Did I see that the young barrister-to-be has returned? As for CLinton-Obama - depends on the day. Today, looks like Clinton. Next week, may look like Obama. This is one for the ages. Other replies in foreign tongue on my talk. Tvoz |talk 05:20, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It was a pointed message to a certain person who thinks Quadrangles/playgrounds/college lawns are more notable than than Mimi Smith and Julia Lennon. --andreasegde (talk) 22:41, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your GA nomination of Daniel Dunglas Home

[edit]

The article Daniel Dunglas Home you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold. It hasn't failed because it's basically a good article, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Daniel Dunglas Home for things needed to be addressed. Leave a note on my talk page, when the issues are addressed. --Redtigerxyz (talk) 06:47, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, i forgot to congrat you. The article has passed GA, this afternoon. Congrats, great job done.--Redtigerxyz (talk) 13:35, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot. --andreasegde (talk) 13:36, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have to be honest and say that I am truly glad that Mr Home got a GA, 'cos this means I can put the bloody book down and stop reading about levitating. It was making me feel seasick. --andreasegde (talk) 17:36, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ther'es someone changing a sourced verbtim quote - am going to revert again, I might need your reverts and help. Cheers Pal, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 14:51, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I left a note on his page. I believe that he has the book, but I think he doesn't know about references. Do you think we could entice him in? --andreasegde (talk) 16:37, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, yeah I jus read it, so it was Eppy wot said it not the other Fabs - I was confused cos I've never read or heard Bestie say he was given a reason. As for enticin him, it might be worth it, cos unlike me, he at least knows that Pete has written an autobiography!! Cheers la, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:32, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, me too.--Crestville (talk) 19:10, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Besty was given a reason by Eppy, but when Besty said it took them two years to find out he wasn't good enough wasn't good enough for him. I think Besty always thought it was something else, which it was, of course. Too shy and quiet and not driven enough, IMHO. --andreasegde (talk) 19:11, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah-Ha! Sir Joseph! Nice to know your'e still with us dear boy! Ow's it goin kidda? Cheers, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 19:32, 17 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He drops in for a cuppa and a biscuit, and then he's off again. --andreasegde (talk) 12:46, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Just a cuppa, he didn't finish his biccy! BTW the "Bestie Boy" has left you a message, but for some strange reason I can't link the talk page for yer, it just becomes a useless red link! Cheers la, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 14:56, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just copy over the Besty's talky-talky web link at the top, 'cos I'm lazy or stupid. The jury's still out on that one. --andreasegde (talk) 16:14, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I shoudda thought of that, that's not lazy, that's dead good that! I seen lemon's page, I better not get in on that, we'll all end up on the bevvy, start singin Maggie May an the like, an start cryin then laffin, then fightin and all end up gettin blocked! Cheers la, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 20:01, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you scousers do the same, and I have to wait until 30 August, when me nephew's getting married, to have the fisticuffs and drunken bollocks. I'm dreading it, so I am. Should I pretend I'm dead to get out of a northern wedding? "I remember wot yer said to me in 1968, yer bas*ted", and all the rest... Bugger. --andreasegde (talk) 20:07, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jus say Bongo's got a dodgey throat, and you've got to drum! No, you go an av a good auld tear up!! 20:24, 18 January 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vera, Chuck & Dave (talkcontribs)

Thank You Very Much

[edit]

Vielleicht ein alternatives Branchenverzeichnis für ein Tierkreiszeichen? Verstecken wir unsere Gerippen unter dunklen Pferde? Anyway, thank you very much (for the Aintree Iron) and the stuff about “old man Epstein”. I’ve got a downloaded, original handwritten copy of Isaac’s entry in the United Kingdom Census 1901 that I thought you might be interested in seeing, but I’ll be fucked if I can upload the fucking thing to here! First time doing this, so I’ll keep trying. Cheers,--Patthedog (talk) 21:15, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have to admit, in the cold light of day, that perhaps I may of had a little too much Chateauneuf-du-Pape last night. I thought at the time I was making a rather witty cryptic reference to the twins of the Thompson variety (don’t ask me why!), but it just looks like twatish nonsense now. Apologies.--Patthedog (talk) 15:57, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome to the club, old chap! After a 'Zipfer'-soaked evening I often wake up screaming, sweating and gripping the sheets wondering what I'd written the night before on Wikifuc+#a (which is the name on my favourites file). Why do you think I archive stuff so rapidly? It's too ghastly to read it again. Have no fear, we're all in the same boat - is that the sound of dripping water? :) --andreasegde (talk) 16:11, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have often had to stand up in a room full of strangers and declare those four words that will dominate my life: “I am an alcoholic”. It always gets respect and clears a way to the bar. Cheers! --Patthedog (talk) 19:46, 21 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What to do?

[edit]

Just did May Pang, and waiting for Julia Baird's review, but I am in serious danger of running out of Beatle people. I could do Mike McCartney, but for some reason I can't get excited enough about it. Who's left to do? The core articles are too busy to get involved in. Hmmm... --andreasegde (talk) 15:13, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Got it. Linda McCartney is next. --andreasegde (talk) 14:26, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Names

[edit]

While looking through GA noms, I stumbled upon your recent one of Linda McCartney. At a cursory glance (I'm not reviewing it), it looked very good, but I noticed something that you might want to correct before someone reviews the article: you refer to the article's subject by first name. According to Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies):

For other subjects, it is preferable to refer to the person by surname, not given name, even if the subject is not controversial. The use of the given name gives the impression that the writer knows the subject personally, which, even if true, is not relevant.

Kakofonous (talk) 01:42, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Got it in one, Kakofonous, it's a problem I have been having for ages. When you have Alfred Lennon, Julia Lennon and John Lennon, which one is Lennon? I can't say Paul and call her McCartney, or call him McCartney without calling her Linda. If I call her McCartney, do I call him Sir Paul, her husband, her spouse, the ex-Beatle? :)) It's a conundrum, without a doubt. --andreasegde (talk) 05:19, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at the Linda article, I have some ideas, but rather than bulldoze all over your fine prose I thought I would just mention them here: "She" would go a long way to avoiding "Linda". "Linda and McCartney" could easily be "McCartney and her husband" - since she is the topic of the article, right? If you want me to try editing her article meself I don't mind, but I figured I'd leave it up to you if you prefer. Shoot me a note if you want me to, since I rarely check my watchlist but I look things up all the time and I'll see the "new messages" banner. Break

[edit]

After Linda McCartney has got her GA rating, I think I will take a long break. She will be my 20th contribution to GA articles about The Beatles (mostly written or helped with) as well as two or three others not related to the Fabs, and I think that's enough. --andreasegde (talk) 16:31, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Long

[edit]

Hi there. I have seen you have labelled my GAN of Zeitgeist (Smashing Pumpkins album) as long. I was wondering what the basis is for this? Is it a specified size in kilobytes, or physical length? Just curious. -- Reaper X 17:23, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

When it's roughly over 24,000/25,000 bytes. It's just to let the reviewer know it's long, and (in my experience) does not affect a reviewers decision to review it at all. Good luck. :) --andreasegde (talk) 17:28, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Somebody has taken the LONG tag out, so what do I care? --andreasegde (talk) 17:17, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like penis envy to me! Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 17:39, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How dare you talk about the spam I get telling me I could have a longer penile length and that viagra is cheaper? Me bird hasn't complained! It's ageism, that's what it bleedin' is... :)) (BTW, trust you to spot me walking into that one - said the actress to the bishop). I'm still laughing - bless your cotton socks...--andreasegde (talk) 17:56, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
LOL! Cosmo Smallpiece 18:03, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's silly, but people think that if an article has LONG tagged on it, it will put reviewers off, but they don't know that it will ATTRACT (Uhh-err missus) more reviewers, precisely because it is LONG. Why? Because there are more MISTAKES in it! There is no feeling more comforting (as someone once said) than criticising other people's work. It's what Wikipedia is for, after all... (Wot, me being negative? Absolutely not, dear chap... :) --andreasegde (talk) 17:56, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beatles Quiz

[edit]

Thank you, I'll be sure to look at that, though I'm not a Beatles trivia guru. Cheers, Basketballone10 23:34, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You could have been a Beatles' guru, if your name is Maharishi Mahesh Yogi :) Do you know that The Beatles were all given the same mantra to chant? They were warned that if they ever told anybody what it was, it wouldn't work anymore. --andreasegde (talk) 18:12, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for pointing out that the link was missing in that David L Cook article about Pine Crest and Boyd Anderson. I thought I had put it in but I guess I missed that one. It is added now for you review. Canyouhearmenow 20:51, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I'm not gonna review it. Sorry, I was just adding a comment to help. --andreasegde (talk) 17:09, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That'll be great, "Those wot as the brains an knows ow to do it" is out, leaving the thickies to muddle through! Cheers pal, Vera, Chuck & Dave (talk) 18:49, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It does not mean one will be transported to the Land of Nod, or become a Will-o'-the-wisp. It only means one will have to work up some enthusiasm for finishing that bleedin' book one started a long while ago, just so one can collect the rejection letters. I will partake of the styleeee our Bradford colleague is currently involved in, meaning the lights are on, but someone is home, albeit in the cellar fixing the plumbing. Also, the thought of that eternal caps lock problem with the McMac name is becoming irritating. As Captain Oates once said, ""I am just going outside and may be some time", which I don't entirely agree with, as any peruser of this page will find out in due course. --andreasegde (talk) 14:59, 6 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
