Thanks for your contributions to Baldwin Academy (Louisiana). Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability and the references are a mess. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 08:25, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

"Soundies" vs. "Big Band Swing shorts.

[edit]

I apologize for confusing these. I've changed the section title to swing shorts. LeBorg, indeed, made soundies for MGM studios in the late 1930s. My source, Dixon, lists three of these, listed as "10 minutes" in duration, but my understanding is that soundies were only about 3 minutes in length. The "shorts" are listed as "20 minutes" in duration. Do you any insights on this? Lord Such&Such (talk) 17:04, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Lord Such&Such. I think Soundies may be a proprietary term for one brand of short films played on a particular company's machines? I find this confusing as the term on its face would appear to apply generically to the genre of short musical films. I don't think the short films in this entry were all Big Band. One was Rumba/Rhumba, another was Russian songs? I also thought one was a Paramount film but I could be wrong or maybe it was the distributor. I find these older musical films interesting. I think we should expand coverage of them and the artists featured in them. Several had story lines. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:22, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think we are discussing the Reginald Le Borg entry. I would also note user:4meter4 and other editors have far more exprtise on these subjects than I do. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:25, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I would list his short musical films first as they were made earlier in his career. I would also mention them in the intro. I didn't see a section for his Soundies? FloridaArmy (talk) 17:29, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your thoughtful response. The soundies, according to the Wiki article, are used on Jukeboxes, not as films shorts in a movie theatre.
As to Rumba or Russian melodies, Big Bands would use these as novelty tunes in a Big Band style and ensemble. Thanks for the links to experts, I'll contact them. Lord Such&Such (talk) 17:38, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Lord Such&Such, as far as Big Band goes I think it depends on what the definition of Big Band is. Our entry says jazz. I wondered if that is a broad enough category for rumbas and Russian style songs performed by band leaders and their orchestras, and I don't know the answer. I do worry Big Band has a jazz music connotation that might not apply to these other style of music but as you note as novelty styles under a broader umbrella of Big Band "jazz" maybe they do.
All of which leads me to another question: are any of the films extant? I only looked into a small portion of the films listed and didn't see videos online. There are writeups on many of them and posters for some. They are mostly from one film company? Were they part of a series? I believe I saw cuts from one of the films was used in a later film so at least some of the original footage may survive. Take care. FloridaArmy (talk) 17:54, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I looked around Utube a bit, didn't see anything. Lord Such&Such (talk) 18:08, 12 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for the compliment FloridaArmy, but I am by no means an expert on this niche topic. @ Lord Such&Such I would suggest looking at these sources. From my understanding, "Soundies" were not short films played in theaters but were made to be played on Panoram movie machines (jukebox like devices that had small screens that were installed in places like restaurants and bars). They were limited to 3 minutes because of the machine. In contrast, musical short films like those made by Vitaphone could be longer and would be consumed in normal movie theaters. The Le Borg films are too long to be Soundies. My guess about the Reginald Le Borg's short films is that they would have been used by Universal as part of a double feature. It was common to pair short films with a feature film in the 1930s and 1940s.

Robert McClenon (talk) 21:42, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How did you determine it is the same subject User:Robert McClenon? I see nothing in that entry about a school or community center. Or a non-Cherokee community. FloridaArmy (talk) 22:12, 15 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User:FloridaArmy - The lede sentence says: Too-Cowee (sometimes Cowee) (also Stecoah), was an important historic Cherokee town located near the Little Tennessee River north of present-day Franklin, North Carolina.. Both the draft and the article are about places with a Cherokee history. The school and the community center, and the modern community, can be included in the existing article. If you think that a separate article is in order, I would suggest discussing it at the parent article talk page, Talk:Too-Cowee. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:19, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
User:Robert McClenon you are asserting they are the same place and rejected the entry on that basis. Google Maps shows them 40 minutes apart, and as I pointed out I'm not finding overlap in the content of the entries. Maybe you should initiate a discussion to find out if they are the same place or share a name (one of several in the case of the former Indian encampment). Thank you for reviewing User:Theroadislong. I am seeing very substantial coverage in the sources including of the principal and his work at the school and I see and entire book from Cornell University on one of the school's programs. I wonder if you'd reconsider? The entry needs expansion but its notability is clearly established. Black high schools in the south are generally quote notable as it was a struggle to brong them into existence. FloridaArmy (talk) 12:06, 16 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
