Hi can you empty this by district?♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:37, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can you sort out Category:Populated places in Georgia (country). The by region should be e.g Category:Populated places in Adjara not cities and towns in (there are villages which need to be included too). Can you empty those cats and rename them Populated places in and empty the main cat by splitting by region?♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:24, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to take part in Wikipedia research

[edit]

Hello,

I am doing research on Wikipedia in multiple languages to see how different Wikipedia websites enable people differently to act and contribute in their ways. A brief description of the study can be found on our project page on Meta-Wiki. The results would give guidelines for further development of Wikipedia in less developed languages.

As an active member of Wikipedia community, you are invited to take part in the study and share your experience about and understanding of Wikipedia with us. It would take 30 to 60 minutes of your time to have an online conversation about Wikipedia. I would be delighted to hear any of your ideas or feedback about the study. Please feel free to contact me with your questions and concerns related to this study and your participation. You can also find the email address on the project page.--WikiTafa (talk) 17:23, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. I created a sub Category:Literary awards by newspapers since there are a lot of those (most yet unidentified), and it will help fit that group into the Category:Literary awards by genre and type, which is the main category of Category:Literary awards . Strange category name

[edit]

Hi, what is the purpose of Category:Categories named after districts of England? The words "categories named after" could be applied to a huge number of categories, so we don't normally do it: omitting those words gives Category:Districts of England, which already exists, with pretty much the same content. This seems like unnecessary duplication to me. --Redrose64 (talk) 00:06, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: CFD

[edit]

Thanks, looks like a fun process. I've been doing it for years without any problems and I really can't justify such a waste of time when no human being alive could conceivably object. IMO the principles behind BEBOLD (and therefore IAR, at least in spirit) apply perfectly to a lot of simple stuff that is now bogged down in process at CFD (even speedies), and they apply especially to a wholly uncontroversial and small scale change as this. ninety:one (reply on my talk) 23:46, 18 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

With respect, I would probably have a heart attack from surprise if someone objected to so uncontroversial a change as that :) ninety:one (reply on my talk) 16:30, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

I can't see much point to categories like Category:Categories named after counties of Wales when all of the contents also remain in Category:Counties of Wales. It just adds another level. Categories like this are usually only useful when all the categories that will reside in it are not already gathered together as subcategories of one solitary parent category. For example, the subcategories of Category:Categories named after former countries are so diffused throughout the subcategories of Category:Former countries, that it is useful gathering them together in one place. But that's not the case with the Wales category, for example, because they are already together in Category:Counties of Wales. Does that make sense? Good Ol’factory (talk) 09:56, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Categories named after counties of Wales has 31 members, which is more than the 22 members of Category:Counties of Wales because there are also Category:Preserved counties of Wales and Category:Historic counties of Wales. Tim! (talk) 10:07, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
OK, perhaps not a great example, but I'm seeing a ton of these. Category:Categories named after regions of Ghana has 10 subcategories but all 10 are in Category:Regions of Ghana (since there are 10 regions of Ghana)? What's the point of that one, for instance? Good Ol’factory (talk) 10:12, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it just leaves the more general questions of whether all eponymous categories should have a "Categories named after..." parent, and how flat the structure should be. Tim! (talk) 10:36, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I suppose kind of it could be stretched into that broader issue, but I think the more immediate issue as I see it is why have an "eponymous category" for a subject when all of its subcategories are already easily accessible in a category?, as with Category:Categories named after regions of Ghana/Category:Regions of Ghana. What are we trying to accomplish here? I always figured these categories existed for ease of browsing categories, not for any sort of "completeness" of a scheme, since having a "categories named after" parent for each subject is probably far beyond the scope of what we can accomplish right now. Good Ol’factory (talk) 08:45, 1 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I certainly take on board your points and will bear them in mind when creating any more similar categories. Tim! (talk) 08:18, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm siding with Good Olfactory here, since I raised a similar q two sections above and got this response. I'm still not convinced: and may yet go to WP:CFD. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:34, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just regarding the referred to response: I don't think there's any solid consensus to approach things that way—dividing the articles into one category and the categories of the same name into a "categories named after" category. I've seen that approach proposed before, but from what I can see it's still very common to put categories named after districts directly in the category named "districts of FOO". Good Ol’factory (talk) 18:12, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I takte note of Good Olfactory's out of process category emptyings with alarm. Tim! (talk) 07:09, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Poland

Hi. Earlier I started Category:Buildings and structures in Poland by voivodeship. Can you find articles to go in each category? Also can you split Category:Castles in Poland by voivodeship. Deletion of Category:Epping Forest

[edit]

Hi Tim! I noticed that you nominated Category:Epping Forest for merger with Category:Epping Forest (district) on 30 Dec, and the merger has now been carried out. I'm not sure where the appropriate place to contest this merger is, hence my coming to your talk page - if you are able to direct me to that place I'd be grateful. The reason I would like to contest the merger is that Epping Forest and the Epping Forest district are not synonymous - much of the Forest itself is not within the political entity that is the district, and the merger has led to some articles (e.g. Wanstead Flats) being inappropriately categorised. Thanks, Lancevortex (talk) 21:20, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The simplest solution would seem to be create a new category Category:Epiing Forest with articles related to only to the woodland and leaving the articles about the council elections etc in the district category. Tim! (talk) 06:58, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
I will do that, thanks. Lancevortex (talk) 11:14, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • "I suppose it just leaves the more general questions of whether all eponymous categories should have a "Categories named after..." parent, and how flat the structure should be. Tim! (talk) 10:36, 31 December 2011 (UTC)"
I just got corrected for placing an author category in "category:american authors" when of course the category is not an author, its a... category! so, i got curious, noticed this group of categories for categories named after cities, noted your question above which i quoted, and ask you: why hasnt this been extended more? we dont even have a "category:categories named after cities in teh united states". the question of how flat it should be is a separate issue, which im not sure i want to try to think about. Is there a forum for this odd, but for scholars of library science, seems really important. Do you think i should create the category for us cities?Mercurywoodrose (talk) 04:06, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Personally I feel that would be a good idea. Just looking at a category like Category:Anniston, Alabama, it is in Category:Cities in Alabama but it could also have a parent called Category:Categories named after cities in the United States. But maybe Category:Categories named after cities in Alabama would be going too far because it would not offer anything that Cities in Alabama doesn't already do. Tim! MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear Tim!,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and

Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's

Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we

teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community,

and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what

you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community

[[Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_82#Learn_to_be_a_Wikipedia_Administrator_-

_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my

students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training,

motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one

of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of

communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)

  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will

never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.

  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an

interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.

  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics

review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have

been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak

with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I

will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your

name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be

more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Dubai from country categories

[edit]

I question your recent edits to some Dubai-related categories where you removed their parent categories linking them up to country hierarchies. Would you do the same to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland? I would think the best thing is to restore those categories where you have removed them. But I'm open to a wider discussion. __meco (talk) 08:14, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

From its article : "Dubai is an emirate within the United Arab Emirates (UAE)", also I note the article is not categorised as a country.
Some England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland categories are categorised directly in "by country" categories, some are not. Usually they are if they contain articles relevant to their pre-union history e.g. Category:Battles involving England. Tim! (talk) 17:42, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a strong opinion on the matter as long as we're adhering to a consistency of practice across the entire establishments by country category spectrum. I read the article on emirate and found its listing somewhat ambiguous with respect to the matter. __meco (talk) 20:52, 20 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of Scotland from country categories

[edit]

Can you explain your rationale for removing for example Category:Schools of medicine by country from Category:Schools of medicine in Scotland and Category:Teaching hospitals by country from Category:Teaching hospitals in Scotland? Thanks, Catfish Jim and the soapdish 10:56, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) Probably because Category:Schools of medicine by country contains Category:Schools of medicine in the United Kingdom which already contained Category:Schools of medicine in Scotland. Similarly, Category:Teaching hospitals by country contains Category:Teaching hospitals in the United Kingdom which already contained Category:Teaching hospitals in Scotland. --Redrose64 (talk) 13:23, 25 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As Redrose says, and per our categorisation guideline at Wikipedia:Categorization, articles and categories should not be in both a parent category and a subcategory.
