Walt Disney Pictures is an American film studio owned by The Walt Disney Company. It is also a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Studios and the main production company for live-action feature films within the Walt Disney Studios, based at the Walt Disney Studios.

Animated features produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, DisneyToon Studios and Studio Ghibli (North America distribution) are usually released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures under the Walt Disney Pictures banner. Exceptions include Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Nightmare Before Christmas which were originally released under Disney's Touchstone imprint, though the Roger Rabbit theatrical shorts (except Roller Coaster Rabbit, which was released through Dick Tracy under the Touchstone banner) and re-releases of Nightmare have been under the Disney banner.

Beginning in 2011, the studio's production logo and on-screen credit was shortened to simply "Disney".

History Behind Walt Disney Pictures

Walt Disney Studios was originally the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, that Walt Disney created with his business partner and brother, Roy, in 1923. Shortly after the company was made, Walt produced fifty-seven Alice comedies. They also created a series of twenty six cartoons with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Walt then began creating Mickey Mouse, but soon Walt reunited himself with his early business partner, Ub Iwerks, and was established as the studio's top animator. The first Mickey cartoon, Plane Crazy, was animated by Ub. Since Mickey Mouse became so popular, the studio created Mickey Mouse merchandise which helped with the studio's revenue. Sadly the company went through bankruptcy during the 1930s. But, the company created Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937 film), which became a huge profit. Since they had money from Snow White, Walt created a new studio in California.[1]

Distribution

Nearly all of Walt Disney Pictures' releases are distributed theatrically by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and through home media platforms via Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. A very select amount of films by Walt Disney Pictures are distributed in Canada by another billion-dollar franchise known as Alliance Films with DVD rights to Universal Studios Home Entertainment, typically for films under Miramax Films, which was recently sold by Walt Disney Studios to Filmyard Holdings.
