  1. Ravenswing (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Yikes, first on the list? In any event, I've been on Wikipedia nearly ten years and with approaching 40,000 edits, and I'm active in researching older hockey articles and AfDs for which this resource would be splendid, and for which Highbeam is less useful for earlier decades. I do a lot of work with people in the entertainment field and find that being able to access older news stories is a great way to obtain information that many times isn't found in books. 52. Jacqke (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)I write a lot of articles dealing with people who died in the 1950s and earlier. For many of them newspaper archives make the difference between a good article and a stub. One example where I have used a newspaper archive in the past is John Olaf Todahl. That article was completely impossible to write without the newspaper obituaries. Other articles that used online newspapers: Seattle Cartoonists' Club and Alice Harriman. Currently working on musician biographies, where old newspapers provide evidence of their notability.Jacqke (talk) 19:29, 31 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @TLSuda: Part of our partnerships is agreeing to the TOC of their databases. Can you confirm that your picture work meets the ToC at their website. They don't claim PD items as copyrighted, but they do claim access and reuse restrictions, Sadads (talk) 17:00, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Sadads: I have no desire to violate their terms of service and primarily would be using the resource for souring images that have been obtained through other means. Many newspapers included are in the public domain and have been scanned from other sources and uploaded but it is hard for us to verify that information. Additionally, I have recently begun a project of working on some articles where the bulk of the sources are in older newspapers that would be useful to gather information from here. Cheers, TLSuda (talk) 19:39, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  69. John M Baker (talk · contribs) Access would be extremely useful to me for my work on articles about word and phrase origins. I've been an editor for several years and have done extensive work on articles such as jazz (word) and the whole nine yards. In addition, I am an active participant at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange and share articles there with requesting editors. In my experience, while other editors often have access to journal databases such as JSTOR, few seem to have access to newspaper databases other than Highbeam. John M Baker (talk) 18:14, 28 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @John M Baker: I am not following how you would use these newspapers as a source. If you are searching back in their database for "earliest" uses wouldn't that constitue WP:OR? Shouldn't we be using secondary or tertiary sources like the OED or Google Ngrams for that kind of work. Could I get a little more detail on how access would be useful for you?
While it's always best to use high-quality secondary sources such as the OED, there are not always current reliable sources to address word and phrase origins. Newspaper sources can be secondary sources in their own right, when better sources are not available, as they often provide information on word and phrase origins. In addition, early uses in newspapers and other media are acceptable as primary sources, although they must be used without interpretation. It would not, for example, be good practice to say "the earliest known use of X was in The New York Times on Y date," unless this fact is derived from a reliable source. Finally, and most importantly, it is valuable to be able to refer to the original sources that are cited by reliable sources. A famous example in the field is an article from 1913, "In Praise of 'Jazz,' a Futurist Word Which Has Just Joined the Language." In writing about jazz (word), naturally I wanted to be able to view and refer to that article (which happily had been reproduced elsewhere), although conclusions about it could be drawn only from secondary sources. @Viswaprabha: Can you clarify how you would use this source? What topical areas are you working on? How would access improve that editing effort? Sadads (talk) 19:39, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Sadads: I am one of the leading editors/ mentors/ content advisers at ml.wikipedia and other Indic projects. (A review of my recent direct contributions may not reflect the effectiveness of my actual contributions as I am spending more time in mentoring and training students and new editors from local communities on focused content with authentic citations). As you may know, we are always short of genuine back references when it comes to detailed information on historic events as they unfolded. I have seen that newspapers, whether they are regional, national or international, have been of tremendous value and use when preparing to write / edit/ refine a serious Wikipedia article on history, especially that of countries of South Asia, South Africa and elsewhere. (For eg: India's freedom movement and personalities involved within that from various regions and cultures). Being able to access newspapers.com will be a powerful tool to overcome this problem. I earnestly hope that you understand the degree of need that we face at communities belonging to less digitized and obscured archives. Thank you. Hi @Sagaciousphil: most of the contents of Newspapers.com, other than 50 years of the New York Times, are local US papers. Do you think they would be useful in your subject areas? Maybe you could give an example of an occasion when Newspapers.com would have been helpful. Thanks! HazelAB (talk) 20:43, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
HazelAB, one very recent example: after working on Bile Beans, a small stub was started on Frank Harris Fulford, who came to the UK from Ontario. I have been trying to track down further information on the very wealthy extended family and some extra information may be able to be gleaned from US local papers. Emily Gordon Cathcart was a stub I started a while ago that I have always intended to expand; she was deeply involved in the Highland Clearances and, again, a lot of extra I formation may be available via local US papers. My editing interests include articles local to Boston as well as contemporary music & science and technology worldwide. I also edit articles as I consult them as a reader. Regularly as I try to find good sources for them I come across sources in newspapers behind paywalls, that I can't access or use. It appears this access would get me behind the paywalls. — Lentower (talk) 17:28, 12 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  90. Justlettersandnumbers (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I'll be frank: American history and society is not my primary interest in Wikipedia. However, in the course of research for topics such as the Artists Union, for article clean-up and particularly for copyright clean-up (I am a copyright clerk), access to this resource would be invaluable. I needed it a few days ago for William Richardson Belknap, to check page 2 of The Cincinnati Enquirer, June 2, 1914 and page 6 of the Louisville, Kentucky, Courier-Journal, 28 October 1898. The second I was able to find because someone had made a clipping of it; for the first I needed access to this site. Neither Highbeam nor Questia had the pages I needed. 91. Ammodramus (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I've been on Wikipedia since October 2009, in which time I've made just over 20,000 edits. Much of my work has been related to my home state of Nebraska: I've added history sections or done major expansions to the history sections of several Nebraska communities (e.g. Columbus,_Nebraska#History), have worked on biographical articles of Nebraskans (e.g. Solomon Butcher), and have written or expanded several articles about Nebraska newspapers (e.g. McCook Daily Gazette). I'm involved with WikiProject National Register of Historic Places, and have worked on articles on NRHP sites in Nebraska and elsewhere (e.g. Dowse Sod House, Battery White). I am fairly obsessive about citations for everything that I put on the page, and access to pre-Internet issues of US newspapers would greatly help me, both in adding new content and in coming up with citations for content added by others. — Ammodramus (talk) 02:51, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @HazelAB:, yes, one example is the uncertain story of the w:frr:Mary Celeste with three North Frisian sailors on board. A look into original newspapers of that time should help to get a clearer view on the 'real' story. Another example concerning a North Frisian sailor ist the mutiny on the ship Braganza in 1838 (no Wikipedia article yet). Up to now I've got little original material from the AAS, but it's very time consuming for the AAS-staff and much easier, if I could browse the newspapers myself. --Murma174 (talk) 21:30, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@LaurentianShield: Looking at your editing history, you are not frequently expanding content. Do you have a specific research agenda that would benefit from this access? Could you please better explain it here? Sadads (talk) 13:49, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have about 40 new articles since 2012 or so, most fairly substantial. One was listed in the San Francisco Bay Area portal for a while as a "did you know" which I think exemplifies my research interest. It is about a innovative business manager named Isaac Friedlander who used new technology to make California into a major wheat producer. This is relatively unknown, and technologically related. I lean towards those "stories" that have a large ratio of practical impact compared to what people know commonly. I use a variety of resources, but historical newspapers a big one.LaurentianShield (talk) 22:24, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@LaurentianShield: You have been less active in the mainspace for the past several months. Do you still think you would have much use for Newspapers.com? Please let me know. Thanks! HazelAB (talk) 15:24, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I definitely will be picking up my pace of editing at some point. In fact today I am adding two new articles, although neither are going to be using newspaper articles as citations. I do find "citations needed" and dubious claims that newspaper article access would help clarify. It is hard to predict how often that would be. I am not just an editor but use Wikipedia all the time for general research and I am constantly on the lookout for such needed corrections. LaurentianShield (talk) 13:46, 19 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I add in-line references to almost every sentence and I already have access to Jstor thanks to Wikipedia, which I find very useful and cite accordingly. I would find access to these newspapers very useful to find more info about local listed buildings with WP:NRHP, prominent figures of the Gilded Age and the Antebellum and Postbellum South (like this), and the early history of California (I am working on early Jews and historic synagogues in LA for example, so access to the Los Angeles Herald would be extremely useful). Primarily my writing concerns women, but I do occasionally write articles on men if they intersect with a policy I am researching. I study policy and its effects on women and minorities. Thus most articles I write are on women who are Native Americans, Latino, black, LGBT, etc. I have done major rewrite on 3 very large articles Recognition of same-sex unions in Mexico, Indian termination policy, Feminism in Mexico. Because women and especially minorities are not covered in a lot of printed histories, newspapers are a critical source of information. Thank you. Jbh (talk) 15:57, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Jbhunley: This resource contains mostly local US newspapers, with very little content after the mid 1980s. Would it be useful for the topics you work on? The ones you mention seem as though they would require more current sources. HazelAB (talk) 17:19, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@HazelAB: Hmmm... I thought they went further... Would the British Newspaper Archive be better? No. I really have no idea what article I'm going to be working on next until I start doing it. I tend to choose articles by hitting "random article" until I find something I think I can improve. I realize that's not a very organized way of approaching article editing and creations, but that's what I do. Articles I've worked on in the past where such access might have been helpful include Thomas M. Blackstock, Thomas M. and Bridget Blackstock House, Hayden Schilling, Clallam County Courthouse, and Vernon Jones. 157. srwalden (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Hi, I am applying for access to Newspapers.com because, as a historian of Colorado with an emphasis on transporation, newspapers, especially local ones are a prime source of information on noteworthy events. I have been a member of Wikiproject Colorado for many years, but because of my physical disability, my contributions have been less than what I had hoped. I would like to be able to reference and crosscheck newspaper sources when reading articles and use it to improve articles with inline citations, a service I have consistently, if slowly, provided to Wikipedia as an editor. I would like to discuss my disability in detail so you can make a more informed decision about my application, but to do so privately. - Srwalden (talk) 16:50, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to new articles created, I also regularly contribute to expansion and improvement of existing articles. Access to Newspapers would greatly broaden my abilities. My editing interests are eclectic, but often include historical subjects from the 1600s through the 1900s. As an example of where access would be useful, I recently worked on articles relating to Hog Island (New York), and had to rely on tertiary sources, such as a recent newspaper account that itself referenced an inaccessible old newspaper account of a hurricane in the late 1800s. Having direct access to that source would make this sort of editing much easier, and allow direct reference to the original source instead of indirect referencing. It would also improve article depth and possibly accuracy. Older records are often less precise than those made today, and it is beneficial to have easy access to multiple contemporaneous sources. 196. AnthroMimus (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I had been working diligently on biographies of 20th century American figures, which have to be culled from Newspapers becaue there are no good biographies in book form. T see how I have done this, check out Stanley Steingut. I was half-way through Irwin Steingut and had to quit because my NYTimes account was not sufficient to finalize the project. (I had been using a database put together by an amateur, but it's search feature was insufficient and I could not spend the time going through thousands of hits the database produced.) If I had access to newspapers.com I oculd finish that, and begin on Brooklyn political boss John H. McCooey, Tammany Hall boss Jimmy Walker, NY Governor Hugh Carey and numerous others. You can see that my intent was to take stub or start class articles and flesh them out fully. Nespapers.com, I think, would be the perfect tool for that. Absent a good newspaper database, I have migrated away from such projects and am currently doing 20th century legal figures (which also could use the newspaper database). See, e.g. Archibald Cox and Donald Turner. For that project I desperately need another resource (HeinOnine) but the account coordinate there has not visited the application site since October. I am willing to do large text additions and reworkings, but I have to have some research resources to work with. AnthroMimus (talk) 14:41, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks, HazelAB. This will save me countless hours with the other clunkier and less comprehensive database (not to mention microfilm rolls, ugh!) BTW, in those articles that I have used the other database (which pulls up PDF files of the newspaper page), should I replace the cites to the newspaper.com one? It will be a pain but I can do it over time if you think useful or appropriate. Also thanks for the very prompt response. Cheers. AnthroMimus (talk) 22:37, 21 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  199. Finktron (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I would find access to Newspapers.com beneficial because a number of the ace pilot Wiki pages are referenced primarily with links to acepilots.com and other secondary online sources, rather than contemporary newspapers, original military documents, personal biographical accounts, etc. I have been an editor for about four months now. Since that time have created two pages, Albert O. Vorse, Jr. and Cecil E. Harris, the former of which has multiple references to Newspapers.com even though I currently only have access to OCR scans of these documents that I find incidentally via Google. Greater access to the full columns and their verbiage—along with accompanying pictures—would go a long way in improving not only the referencing of existing/future articles, but would make research much smoother in the process. US Navy aces, even those with 15 or more credited kills, rarely have Wiki pages. My goal for the next couple months is to create at least 3 more B-grade articles for e.g. Nooy, Fleming and others who have rendered significant wartime as well as post-war contributions. Thank you for your consideration, Finktron (talk) 21:09, 13 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Acdixon (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I do a pretty substantial amount of work on Kentucky politicians. Through my local library, I have access to Newsbank, which includes the Lexington Herald-Leader, but not The Courier-Journal. Also, Newsbank only goes back to about 1983. Newspapers.com would fill in these two gaping holes. For example, I am currently trying to create articles for Kentucky Supreme Court justices, and many served prior to the time period covered by Newsbank. This is just one example of how Newspapers.com access would be helpful. Acdixon (talk · contribs) 15:03, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please let me know briefly how Newspapers.com access would help you with your Wikipedia editing? Thanks! HazelAB (talk) 22:53, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I should have added it. I contribute to wiki in many different fields, many times I need to have access to the archive of newspapers, which are usually closed and need a subscription (which I do not have). For example, recently I was working on the article of an Iranian MP who lived 100 years ago, and I had heard that the newspaper "Times" had reported on his activities back then, but I did not have access to its archive. Had I had access to it, I would have improved the article with more material. --Drako (talk) 23:46, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Sicaspi: Most of the contents, other than 50 years of the New York Times, are local US papers. Do you think you could use them? @Maile66: It is a two-step process. Now that you have registered at Newspapers.com and filled in the Google form I will contact Customer Support at Newspapers.com and they will upgrade your account to full access. This should happen quickly but may take a few days. Once your account has been upgraded, you will have access for one year. By the way NewspaperArchive.com has similar registration system so there will be a short wait for that one too. HazelAB (talk) 19:12, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  8. Lemongirl942 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I usually work with sourcing Singapore related articles and since Singapore was a British colony, access to colonial era British newspapers would help me in researching facts. Applying for this as I just got to know that the British Newspaper Archive is no longer distributing accounts. My main work is often sourcing obscure facts about etymology and biographies which do not seem to be available anywhere else and this would be a useful research tool. I am also active at AfDs, so this can help me look up historical facts. Thank you. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 14:05, 20 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Lemongirl942: According to the resource description above Newspapers.com "is particularly suited for Wikipedia content about the 18th, 19th and the first 3⁄4 of the 20th century in the United States and global topics affecting the United States. The collection includes some major newspapers for limited periods (i.e., 50 years of the New York Times), but mostly consists of regional papers from the 1700s onward. Very few titles go beyond the late 1980s." The great majority of the content is regional US papers. Do you think it would be useful for your Singapore related articles? HazelAB (talk) 13:16, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi HazelAB. Newspaper.com has historical newspapers from the Commonwealth countries as well, particularly Australia and England. A search for Singapore does show there is coverage. I require this specifically for colonial era information. --Lemongirl942 (talk) 13:53, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
