German[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German ougenweide. Equivalent to Auge (“eye”) + Weide (“meal”), the latter element being obsolete in this sense in modern German.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Augenweide f (genitive Augenweide, plural Augenweiden)
- (dated) feast for the eyes, eye candy
- 1858, Berthold Sigismund, Die Feuerzeuge:
- Für solche Nacheiferer Schalckau’s war freilich eine Zunderbrennerin, deren Gestalt wie ein Phönix aus der Flamme der Leinwand vortrat, oder eine Frau, welche in den glimmenden Zunder blies und von der matten Gluth roth angestrahlt wurde, eine wahre Augenweide.
- For Schalckau's emulators a tinder burner (f), whose form arises like a phoenix from the linen's flame, or a woman, who blew into the glowing tinder and was illuminated by the dim glow, was of course true eye candy.
