[edit]Uncertain. Perhaps from:
- Old Khmer *ʼār (“childless woman”), corresponding to Modern Khmer អារ (ʼaa, “married but childless; barren, infertile, sterile; etc”);
- clipping of อรทัย (“maiden; damsel”), which was possibly derived from Old Khmer ʼārttai (“childless woman”);
- clipping of อรไท or อ่อนไท้ (“noble woman; woman in authority; etc”); or
- corruption of อ่อน (ɔ̀ɔn, “gentle; soft; young; etc”).
