Japanese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Theories include derivation from ほぼ(あら) (ara, rough, roughly) + まし (mashi, auxiliary verb), or from ゆう() (ari, stem or continuative form of ある) + はし(はし) (hashi, a bit; nearly). Some speculate derivation from り + まし, but Kokugo Daijiten calls this dubious (“疑問ぎもん”).[1]
