Etymology

ある (aru, “to be, to exist”, 連体れんたい形がた (rentaikei) of the classical verb あり (ari)) +‎ い (i, nominalizing suffix) +‎ は (wa, topic marker). Arose from 漢文かんぶん訓読くんどく (kanbun kundoku).
