Glyph origin

[edit]

Unorthodox variant simplified from らく found in a moveable type copy of みねみなみ逸事いつじ. First attested in 《そうもと以來いらい俗字ぞくじ》, a variant forms dictionary compiled in 1930 that records unorthodox forms (俗字ぞくじ (súzì)) that have existed since the Song dynasty. Also found as a cursive form (草書そうしょ (cǎoshū)) of らく in 中國ちゅうごく書法しょほうだい字典じてん.

Eventually adopted as an official simplified character by the People's Republic of China in the 1956 Chinese Character Simplification Scheme.
