Invented for Japanese mahjong by Rin Mokō はやし茂光しげみつ from such a call from some regions of China, after he found that the usual call in Mandarin () was problematic for Japanese speakers. He adopted the character さかえ as ateji, but later discovered that the original character for this sound was (lǒng). Nevertheless, the character さかえ remained and was accepted as standard.
