Glyph origin

Unorthodox variant simplified from にご (しょくむし) found in the Ming dynasty orthographic dictionary がくさんせい. Also found in 《そうもと以來いらい俗字ぞくじ》, a variant forms dictionary compiled in 1930.

Eventually adopted as an official simplified character by the People's Republic of China in the 1956 Chinese Character Simplification Scheme.
