Glyph origin

Unorthodox variant simplified from 濁にご (蜀しょく → 虫むし) found in the Ming dynasty orthographic dictionary 《字じ學がく三さん正せい》. Also found in 《宋そう元もと以來いらい俗字ぞくじ譜ふ》, a variant forms dictionary compiled in 1930.

Eventually adopted as an official simplified character by the People's Republic of China in the 1956 Chinese Character Simplification Scheme.
