Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋しゃく譜ふ詳しょう節ぶし / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 굳 (Yale: kwut).

The modern form is equivalent to 굳 (gut) +‎ 엉 (-eong, diminutive suffix) +‎ 이 (-i, noun suffix), and is first attested in the mid-nineteenth century.
