Etymology 1

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月つき印しるし釋しゃく譜ふ / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean ᄉᆞ라ᇰ (Yale: sòlàng).

Probably a nativisation of the Sino-Korean term 사량 (思量しりょう, saryang, “deep thoughts, consideration; longing”). In the fifteenth century, the word more commonly meant "thought; reflection," identical to the Chinese semantics, in addition to "love".

Displaced native 괴〯다〮 (Yale: kwǒy-tá, “to love”) and ᄃᆞᆺ〯다〮 (Yale: tǒs-tá, “to love”).
