Usually thought to derive from Medieval Latin Aleguerium (literally “stagnation of seaweed”) or Sardinian S'Alighèra, from aliga (“seaweed; rubbish”) + -era, but either way from Latin alga (“seaweed”), from Proto-Indo-European *alg-, *alǵ- (“to be dirty, slimy”).
