Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Ultimateria (talk) 01:09, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much, Ultimateria. I've been a Wikipedian for some time, and only made a few sporadic edits here. I'm interested in doing more audio recordings, especially since I've had fun contributing to Common Voice.
I appreciate you making a bluelink out of my talk link! = Paul2520 (talk) 01:17, 25 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

oo oo aa aa

[edit]

Are ya sure that's what a monkey sounds like? Your "oo oo ah ah" seems very blasé. Equinox 04:45, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Equinox: Well I've been called a monkey's uncle...
I'll make another attempt one of these days! = paul2520 💬 04:50, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Lingua Libre

[edit]

Have you tried using this site to make your voice recordings? Rodrigo5260 (talk) 02:09, 9 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Rodrigo5260: I have not. I see speed of generating recordings as a benefit, but based on my setup and lack of soundproofing in my office, I do feel strongly about the (small, albeit noticeable) level of cleanup I do to my recordings.
On this note... do you have any feedback about my recordings? Always looking to improve! = paul2520 💬 18:59, 9 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
To me they are okay. Rodrigo5260 (talk) 19:02, 9 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Lingua Libre Audio Template

[edit]

Hello,

In case you are unfamiliar, here is a code for copying and pasting Lingua Libre audios without manually having to type the particular name. Remember the code is case-sensitive, and make sure your audio name does not contain typos.

=== Pronunciation ===
* {{audio|en|LL-Q1860(eng)-Paul2520-{{subst:PAGENAME}}.wav|a=GA}}

PetScan

[edit]

Hello,

Do you know about PetScan? [1] This is an easy way to find pages that need edits. Suppose you want to add audio to humorous terms on Wiktionary. Set the Language to "en" and Project to "wiktionary". For categories, enter "English humorous terms". For negative categories, type "English terms with audio pronunciation". Set the Combination to an Intersection, and hit "Do it!"

PetScan and the Lingua Libre Audio template certainly do save a plethora of time. I wonder where these tools were when I was hunting and pecking for Wiktionary pages without audio when I was still 15!

Thank you Flame, not lame (Don't talk to me.) 02:05, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Flame, not lame! Thanks for your note.
I have used PetScan. I like your idea of finding humorous terms -- I have not tried it for that purpose! I will test it out soon.
Thanks for your edits -- and by the way, I really like your userpage! = paul2520 💬 15:45, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
thank u, uwu. I am trying to be unique with emojis galore and no BBL box. Flame, not lame (Don't talk to me.) 21:35, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

soothsayer

[edit]

Thank you for the great work you are doing!

I think I spotted an error in one of your recordings. In the entry soothsayer, the IPA that is listed for both the British and the American pronunciation indicates that the "th" should be unvoiced, so that the word "sooth" rhymes with "truth" rather than "smooth" (unlike the word "soothe", where the "th" is voiced). It looks like Dictionary.com and merriam-webster.com also use the unvoiced consonant in their audio examples.

That being said, it would not surprise me at all to discover that a majority of modern speakers say it using the voiced consonant (as, to my ear, you did), since people encounter the word by reading rather than by listening, and the verb "soothe" remains common while the noun "sooth" has disappeared. @Tracy Hall: Thanks for catching this! I just uploaded a new version.
Let me know what you think! And feel free to provide feedback on any of my other recordings. = paul2520 💬 15:59, 29 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
