[edit]Pronunciation
[edit]Verb
[edit]bomben (weak, third-person singular present bombt, past tense bombte, past participle gebombt, auxiliary haben)
- (intransitive) to bomb (detonate explosives)
- Die NATO bombt, wo es ihr gefällt.
- NATO bombs wherever it likes.
- (transitive) to bomb (someone or something) into some state
- Deutschland wollte die Briten zur Zusammenarbeit bomben.
- Germany wanted to bomb the British into cooperation.
Usage notes
[edit]- There is a transitive derivation bebomben, but this is very rare. The normal transitive equivalent is bombardieren, which however tends to imply shelling or dropping of bombs. For a sentence such as “Terrorists have bombed a supermarket” one could say Terroristen haben in einem Supermarkt eine Bombe gezündet.
