Borrowed from a South Slavic language, probably Serbo-Croatian vàmpīr / ва̀мпӣр or Bulgarian вампи́р (vampír),[1] ultimately derived from Proto-Slavic *ǫpyrь (vampire). Anlaut v- > dh- is recorded in Gheg Albanian, reinforced by folk reanalysis as dham (tooth, standard dhëmb) +‎ pi (drink).[2][3]
