Maltese
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Eventually from Latin camera, from Ancient Greek καμάρα (kamára). It is possible that the form was inherited from Arabic قَمْرَة (qamra), but this depends on the age of this borrowing (said to be from Italo-Romance). Otherwise a borrowing from Sicilian càmmara, càmmira. The plural kmamar seems to reflect the Sicilian gemination. Doublet of kamera and ċimnija.
