Etymology

18th century, from Low German, from Middle Low German rangelen (to wrestle), iterative of rangen, byform of wrangen (to struggle). Cognate with English wrangle. Related with German ringen (to wring one's hands), auswringen (wring out), from Proto-Germanic *wringaną.
