[edit]From Proto-Finnic *siima, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *sīmô. Cognate with dialectal Estonian sihm, Ingrian siima, Karelian siima, Livvi siimu, Ludian šiim, Veps siim, sim and Votic siimõ.
