Latvian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Taizeme (“Thaland”) + -isks, with Taizeme from tajs (“Thai”) + zeme (“land”).
Adjective
[edit]taizemisks (definite taizemiskais, comparative taizemiskāks, superlative vistaizemiskākais, adverb taizemiski)
- Thai (relating to the Thai, to Thailand, or to the Thai language)
- izteikti taizemiska garša ― definitely Thai taste
- viņa pietiekoši taizemiska izskatās ― she looked sufficiently Thai
- viņa nekad mūžā neko taizemisku nav baudījusi ― she has never enjoyed anything Thai in her life
Usage notes
[edit]- Usually tajs (rare, usually found in its genitive plural form taju, used as an adjective), tajietis, tajiete and tajisks refer to the Thai people as an ethnic group, while taizemietis, taizemiete, taizemisks refer to citizens of Thailand, including those who are not ethnically Thai.
- English “Thai” as an attributive adjective usually corresponds in Latvian to taju, tajiešu or taizemiešu, the genitive plural forms of tajs, tajietis and taizemietis. The adjectives tajisks and taizemisks are commonly used predicatively (“this is Thai”), or in their adverbial forms tajiski, taizemiski.
