High mileage, one previous owner: Latvia buys used Estonian locomotive

In order to provide some extra rail services towards the end of the year, Latvia has bought a used diesel locomotive from Estonia.

The train is currently being prepared for service, according to acting chairman of national rail company JSC "Pasažieru vilciens" (Passenger train) Raitis Nešpors, speaking to Latvian Radio May 20.

"We are currently renovating it and therefore we hope that this train will be able to start transporting passengers by the start of the winter season," Nešpors said.

With the arrival of the winter schedule, additional services could appear in the direction of Liepāja or Daugavpils, as the company plans to supplement its existing rolling stock of diesel trains with the second-hand train purchased from Estonia.

At the same time, Nešpors pointed out that the number of train trips taken this year, compared to the first quarter of last year, has increased by 23% on both electrified and non-electrified lines, saying that the gradual introduction of new electric trains "has served as an additional incentive for passengers to use the comfort offered by the new trains and, therefore, the number of passengers has increased."
