The Digest includes data form many sources, both government and private, and draws especially on the surveys and activities carried out by the National Center for Education Statistics. Information is provided on a number of subjects, including the number of schools and colleges, teachers, enrollments, libraries, and various aspects of educational finance. The Digest contains these chapters: (1) All Levels of Education; (2) Elementary and Secondary Education; (3) Postsecondary Education; (4) Federal Programs for Education and Related Activities; (5) Outcomes of Education; (6) International Comparisons of Education; and (7) Libraries and Educational Technology. Also included is a brief overview of current trends in U.S. education that supplements the tabular materials in chapters one through seven. The Digest concludes with an appendix that provides definitions and supplemental information. New material in this years Digest includes information on the use of instructional approaches by kindergarten teachers, information on student-teacher ratios, and the percent distribution of elementary and secondary school students by average grades.
