Manuscripts Division

The Edward Livingston Papers document the career of American lawyer, diplomat, statesman, and legal theorist Edward Livingston. The collection also contains domestic, financial, and property records of some three dozen others, mostly members of the Livingston/Beekman branch of the Hudson River Valley Livingstons and the Montgomery, Davezac, Barton, and Hunt families; the family surveyor/agent John Cox, Jr.; and an Albany-area merchant Benjamin French, whose forfeited estate ended up in Edward Livingston's hands for debt collection.

Consists primarily of the correspondence of 20th-century French poet René Char (1907-1988); a smaller subset includes correspondence and records documenting his involvement with the French Resistance during World War II.

Ebenezer Foote (1756-1829) was a cattle agent for the Continental Army's Commissary Department during the American Revolutionary War, a merchant, a land agent, a politician, and a judge in New York State. Foote's papers date from 1766 to 1925, with the majority dating from 1785 to his death in 1829, and primarily document his land agency business in Delhi, Delaware County, New York. In addition to the land and financial records related to his business, the collection also contains some legal records, records documenting Foote's work as inspector of cattle for the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and limited family records.

Consists of correspondence, notebooks, drafts and proofs of articles and reviews, photographs, documents, printed ephemera, and other papers of the English literary critic and editor Raymond Mortimer (1895-1980).

The Butler Family Papers consists of works, notes, correspondence, journals, photographs, and other materials of Benjamin Franklin Butler (1795-1858), William Allen Butler (1825-1902), Mary Russell Marshall Butler (1827-1919), Charles Henry Butler (1859-1940), Harriet Allen Butler (1861-1914), and other members of the Butler family.

Consists of 47 bound volumes of chiefly Babi texts in Arabic and Persian composed or copied between 1846 and 1923 and purchased by William McElwee Miller, a Presbyterian clergyman and a missionary in Iran from 1919 to 1962.

Charles F. W. McClure (Princeton Class of 1888) was a professor in the Princeton University Department of Biology. His papers consist of letters from numerous biologists and anatomists. Also included are some of McClure's writings, research and teaching files, diaries, and photographs.

Consists of the papers of Princeton art historian Rensselaer W. Lee, including correspondence, lectures, and manuscripts and notes for two published works.

The Chess Papers of Eugene B. Cook consists of correspondence, copies of classic chess manuscripts and diagrams, and memorabilia of Cook (Class of 1850), as well as notes and printed matter of the Appalachian Mountain Club.

Mary Mapes Dodge was an author and editor of St. Nicholas magazine. This collection contains manuscripts, correspondence, financial records, and photographs of Mary Mapes Dodge, as well as an unfinished biography of her by Spencer Mapes.

Consists of an assembled collection of correspondence, documents, and manuscripts related to Princeton University, its students, and its employees, some in an official capacity and others as personal or family records of those associated with Princeton University, or the College of New Jersey as it was known prior to the end of the 19th century. Materials span from the 1740s until the 1980s, though most pertain to the mid-18th through early 20th century.

The Miriam Holden Collection consists of books, periodicals, manuscripts, clippings, photographs, cartoons, letters, and other materials about women and their achievements collected by Holden.

Bruce and Beatrice Blackmar Gould were co-editors at the Ladies' Home Journal in the mid 20th century. Bruce Gould also worked with the Saturday Evening Post. Their correspondence includes letters between Bruce and Beatrice about their co-editorship and co-authorship, letters with writers for the Ladies' Home Journal, and letters from actresses about the Ladies' Home Journal. Also included is a collection of letters about Marion Crawford's book The Little Princesses, some of Beatrice's speeches, speeches by others, and printed matter.

Collection consists of 386 letters and documents of royalty, nobility, statesmen, and other celebrities of France, from the reign of Louis XII to the commencement of the French Revolution.

Consists of production files, correspondence, and administrative and financial records of Blue Wind Press and George Mattingly Design, mostly relating to books and literary journals published in the 1970s and early 1980s. Authors represented include William S. Burroughs, Ted Berrigan, Anselm Hollo, and others associated with the Iowa Writers' Workshop and the Actualist poetry movement.

The Laurence Hutton Photograph Albums consists of several hundred photographs and numerous portraits of prominent 19th-century artists and literary, political, and historical figures, compiled by editor and essayist Laurence Hutton.

Jorge Edwards is a writer and former diplomat whose critical stance on oppressive dictatorships in Latin America has sparked controversy. This collection contains drafts of some of his novels, short stories, essays, and articles, as well as notebooks and correspondence with literary figures, politicians, and his extensive family.

Clement Heaton (1861-1940) was an artist, stained glass painter, sculptor, and mosaicist. His collection consists of material concerning the making and history of stained glass compiled by Heaton. Included are files of original artwork and photographs of stained glass and monuments, many notes, articles, and some correspondence on general studies in Medieval and Gothic art, craftmanship, glassmaking, and cathedrals.

Potter was a lifelong British military officer who attained the rank of brigadier-general. He served in Ireland (1898), South Africa (1901-1902), Egypt and Sudan (1903-1913), and World War I (1914-1918); he retired in 1927. Consists primarily of Potter's lengthy correspondence with his mother and future wife while stationed abroad, often during significant British military operations, including censor-stamped envelopes.

The Alejandro Rossi Papers consist of personal notebooks, manuscripts, correspondence with writers, academics, editors and artists, and printed material of the writer.

Struthers Burt was a noted poet, prose writer and rancher in the first half of the twentieth century. The collection includes various copies of some of Burt's own works, correspondence with family and friends from his days at Princeton University, and assorted materials about his family and genealogy.

Consists of records of three successive generations of the Iturbe e Iraeta, a prominent, Mexican merchant family of Basque origin, active in Mexican colonial and interregional trade from the 1760s to the 1840s.

Consists of a closed collection of miscellaneous single-item acquisitions that span multiple collecting areas, topics, genres, and time periods. Many materials relate to United States literary, historical, and political figures, including business and personal letters, manuscripts, drawings, photographs, and official documents due to the type of materials that were initially added to the collection.

The collection contains manuscripts related to four generations of the Blanco White family, spanning two centuries: including works, diaries, correspondence, documents, accounts and expense records, and printed material. Joseph Blanco White, the Spanish-English writer and religious figure, remains the focus of the collection; however, his brother Fernando, a politician and intellectual of 19th-century Seville, also accounts for a substantial part of the material. Of particular interest are autograph manuscripts of several of Joseph's literary efforts, as well as other genealogical material relating to the Blanco White family.

This collection consists of papers of Antōnēs Dekavalles, a Greek poet, professor at Fairleigh Dickenson University, and editor of The Charioteer, A Review of Modern Greek Culture. Included are: correspondence, autograph manuscripts and typescripts, drafts, miscellaneous notes, and files related to his affiliated organizations.

Contains notebooks and drafts of the Nicaraguan-born Salvadoran writer Claribel Alegría's poetry, articles and essays, novels, short stories, speeches, and translations. Also includes correspondence with publishers, family, and such writers as Mario Benedetti, Julio Cortázar, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Alfonso Quijada Urías, and Sergio Ramírez. Additionally, the collection contains photographs, audiovisual material, and writings of others on Alegría.

Robert H. Dicke, born in 1916, was a Princeton physicist, educator, and author. The collection includes Dicke's professional correspondence, files from his work with the Office of Naval Research, NASA, and the National Science Board, and the National Science Foundation, and assorted other documents.

The Emir Rodriguez Monegal Papers consists of correspondence, manuscripts of novels, short stories, verse, plays, and essays by others, mansucripts of essays and criticism by Rodriguez Monegal, photographs, and printed and recorded material.

Consists of a photocopied duplicate archive of the original Albert Einstein Archive at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, divided into scientific and non-scientific sections, including published and unpublished manuscripts, articles, lectures, notebooks, notes, travel diaries (1925-1933), family papers, and correspondence.

The Helen MacInnes Papers contain the original manuscripts of twenty-two published novels, miscellaneous articles and speeches, and a play of renown Scottish novelist Helen MacInnes.

Consists of genealogist Silvia S. Bennet's works about, and research papers of, various members of the Olyphant family of Charleston, South Carolina, and New York State.

Consists of author files of Review: Latin American Literature and the Arts.

Consists of correspondence, documents, a diary (1838), genealogies, documents, legal papers, financial records, and printed matter of the Hubbell family of Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York.

Edward Coles was a prominent anti-slavery political figure, who most notably served as governor of Illinois when the state became officially anti-slavery through a referendum vote. These papers include personal notes from Coles, correspondence to and by Coles with friends, colleagues, and family, documents about Coles, and the writings of other people.

The F. Scott Fitzgerald Papers (C0187) is a comprehensive literary archive containing the original manuscripts, working drafts, corrected galleys, personal and professional correspondence, autobiographical scrapbooks, photographs, and other original materials of F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), Princeton Class of 1917.

Ridgely Torrence was an American poet, playwright, and editor of The New Republic, and his papers document the literary activity and relationship of a large group of American writers between the years 1890 and 1950. Particularly well-represented are American poets William Vaughn Moody and Edwin Arlington Robinson.

Consists of poetry manuscripts, documents, pictorial works, correspondence, and miscellanea relating to the English poet William Cowper (1731-1800), and to his circle of family, friends, and editors, collected by Neilson Campbell Hannay.

Since 1950, the Princeton University Library has been successful in acquiring additional manuscripts and related materials to complement the F. Scott Fitzgerald Papers (C0187). The F. Scott Fitzgerald Additional Papers (C0188) is comprised of Fitzgerald manuscripts (including his published juvenilia), letters, documents, photographs, tape recordings, memorabilia, and other materials donated by the author's family, friends, and publishers.

This collection consists of virtually all of the surviving records of Scribners (1846-1984), the New York City publisher, and reflect aspects of all of its publishing functions (soliciting and acquiring books, editing manuscripts, printing and manufacturing books, advertising and publicizing publications) and business concerns (book and magazine publisher, retail bookstore, subscription books department, educational books department, printing press and bindery, rare books department). Included are files of editorial correspondence with authors, manufacturing records about book production, advertising records, author contracts, a collection of dust jackets, book catalogs, ledgers, and photographs. While there are gaps in most of the series or record groups, there are records representative of all of the firm's former permutations: Baker & Scribner, Charles Scribner & Co., Scribner, Armstrong & Co., Scribner, Armstrong & Welford, Scribner & Co., Charles Scribner's Sons. The bulk of the material (1880s-1970s), however, dates from the period when the publisher bore its most familiar name, "Charles Scribner's Sons." There is also material related to early publishers' organizations and international copyright.

Consists of correspondence, manuscripts, and printed material relating to the Fitzgerald biography The Far Side of Paradise (1951) by the literary critic, editor, biographer, author, and educator Arthur Mizener.

Consists of files of American antiquarian book dealer J. Howard Woolmer's correspondence with various poets and writers and author photographs.

William Harlowe Briggs was a playwright and editor at Harper & Brothers during the early part of the twentieth century. His papers include 24 scripts from Briggs's plays, family correspondence, playbills, lectures, and diaries from Briggs's mother and father.

James P. Walker was an American publisher, author, and co-founder of Walker, Wise, and Co. (circa 1860). His papers contain sermons, autobiographical notes, a diary, commonplace books, photographs, a scrapbook, memorabilia, and printed matter, with the bulk of the material comprised of personal and professional correspondence, much of it covering the period of the Civil War.

Consists of papers collected by American businessman and importer Bernhard K. Schaefer (Princeton Class of 1920) relating to the Civil War.

Consists of research notes, articles, bibliographies, photographs, and printed matter of Don C. Seitz, American journalist, poet, and business manager of the New York World (1898–1923).

William Rankin (Princeton Class of 1886) was an art historian, specializing in Italian art, and was co-author, with Alice Van Vechten Brown, of A Short History of Italian Painting (1914). Consists of correspondence of Rankin.

Consists of selected correspondence and drafts and/or corrected typescripts of short stories, articles, and five novels of American novelist Benedict Thielen.

The José Bianco Papers consists of notes and correspondence of the Argentine editor, author, and translator José Bianco, as well as a small selection of writings by others and audio recordings of Cuban poets José Lezama Lima and Nicolás Guillén reading their poetry.

Elias Boudinot was a lawyer and Revolutionary statesman, serving as member of the Continental Congress (president, 1782), secretary of foreign affairs (1783-84), New Jersey congressman (1789-95), and director of the U.S. Mint (1795-1805). The collection consists of miscellaneous letters and documents of Boudinot, many of which concern his land dealings.

Consists primarily of letters and autograph copies of parts of manuscripts of 19th-century English and American poets and novelists collected by American art critic and Princeton professor, Frank Jewett Mather (1868-1953).

Consists of selected papers of Lawrance Thompson, including manuscripts for his books on Robert Frost and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, lecture typescripts, and a small amount of correspondence (1936-1942) from the time he was Princeton University Library's Curator of Manuscripts and editor of the Princeton University Library Chronicle.

The collection consists of set decorator Jessica Lanier's set photographs for several of Woody Allen's films, including Sweet and Lowdown (1999), Small Time Crooks (2000), and The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001), as well as her copies of shooting scripts and revisions. Photographs consist of contemporary color prints and Polaroids, as well as some negatives.

Consists of two collections of materials created by or related to American suffragette and reformer Mary Ashton Rice Livermore (1820-1905), including autograph notes, drafts, typescripts, and reprints of lectures, addresses, articles, and short stories by Livermore; correspondence; family documents and photographs; and clippings and printed materials, some of which were collected by Adelaide Witherington Boynton.

The William Michael Rossetti Collection consists of manuscripts, sketches, correspondence, and miscellanea of the English art critic and essayist William Michael Rossetti (1829-1919).

Consists primarily of papers collected by Miriam Rogers concerning Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) as medical missionary and physician at his hospital (founded in 1913) in Lambarene, French Equatorial Africa, after World War II. Rogers shared Albert Schweitzer's interest in music (as a pianist) and medicine, leading her to become chairman (1950-1971) of the""Friends of Albert Schweitzer" in Boston. She made several trips to Africa, France, and Germany to visit Schweitzer.

Consists of selected papers of E. F. H. Sutton (Princeton Class of 1895) and his collection of papers of his longtime friends, the former Countess Marguerite (de Godart) Cunliffe-Owen and her husband, Frederick Cunliffe-Owen.

Consists of assorted photographs of Athens and other sites in Greece taken by the Greek photographer Dimitris Constantine (fl. 1850s).

The John Watson Dalby and George James De Wilde Collection consists of correspondence between John Watson Dalby (b. 1799) and George James De Wilde (1804-1871) covering the years 1826-1871. Both were poets and literary men, as well as friends of Leigh Hunt, whom their letters frequently concern. Dalby's letters often include verses of his poetry, excerpts of Leigh Hunt's works, and discussions on other contemporary authors. Dalby's published work includes Poems (London, 1822) and Tales, Songs, and Sonnets (London, 1866).

Consists of business records relating to the nineteenth-century dry goods (especially cotton) business of Abraham Brinkerhoff in New York City.

The Esar Levine Collection of Frank Harris consists of the writings, correspondence, and printed matter of, and relating to, Frank Harris (1855-1931) as collected by Esar Levine (1899-?), Harris's disciple, agent and friend. Harris, an Irish-born, naturalized American citizen, was a prolific writer and journalist/editor who is perhaps best known for his scandalous autobiography, My Life and Loves, which was censored in America and parts of Europe.

Morris "Moe" Berg (1902-1972) was a Major League Baseball player, linguist, and lawyer who became a spy in World War II. The papers are comprised of correspondence, notes, photographs, and miscellaneous and printed materials covering all aspects of his life and work, but relating primarily to Berg's work with multiple government agencies.

Consists of miscellaneous letters and documents--originals as well as copies--relating to multiple generations of the Ogden family of Elizabeth (formerly Elizabethtown), New Jersey.

Consists of material relating to the career of Thomas Hoving, who was director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City from 1967 to 1977, author, consultant, and the editor-in-chief of Connoisseur magazine from 1981 to 1991.

Elias Boudinot was an American lawyer and public official who represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress. This collection consists of correspondence, documents, and printed material relating to Boudinot and his family, collected by Langdon K. Thorne.

Francis De Haes Janvier was a Philadelphia businessman and poet. Consists of correspondence of civil war poet Francis Janvier and his family as well as drafts and autograph copies of his works.

Consists of a closed collection of miscellaneous source material--letters, documents, and other separate, unbound manuscript items--pertaining to the history of the American West and Southwest, largely from the perspective of white settlers, acquired by the Library from 2013 to 2020.

Charles Ruas is an American author, interviewer, editor, literary and art critic, and French translator, who served as the Director of the Drama and Literature Department for New York's Pacifica radio station WBAI-FM in the late 1970s and interviewed writers for radio broadcast and print, including Toni Morrison, Michel Foucault, Carlos Fuentes, Eudora Welty, Susan Sontag, Truman Capote, Buckminster Fuller, Andy Warhol, Mario Vargas Llosa, and others. Included are photographs and documents on Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, the St. Marks poetry project, and avant-garde artists and performers. The papers include transcripts and audiocassette tapes of Ruas's interviews with authors and artists, as well as typescripts and galleys of work by writers Ruas edited, including Marguerite Young, and some related photographs, notes, recordings, and correspondence. There are also some translations and other writings by Charles Ruas, as well as a collection of family photographs and papers documenting the history of his family in Tianjin, China, from the 1860s through the mid-20th century.

Consists of writings, correspondence, and printed matter of the Jewish scholar, author, and lecturer Erich Kahler, including some magazines and newspaper articles collected for his research purposes. There is also material and correspondence assembled after his death by his wife, Alice Loewy Kahler.

The collection contains the manuscripts of composer and educator Roger Sessions. It includes compositions reflecting his use of the 12-tone system of composition and ranging from exercises and studies to concertos, sonatas, operas ("Lancelot and Elaine" and "Montezuma"), and symphonies (1 through 9). Also included are miscellaneous musical works such as divertimenti, nocturnes, chorale studies, quintets, and cantatas along with the manuscripts for two prose works.

Susanna Moore is an American novelist. Her papers consist of drafts of novels and nonfiction books, correspondence with writers and artists, teaching materials from her time spent teaching incarcerated writers and Princeton undergraduates, photographs, and audiovisual material.

Consists of approximately 500 miscellaneous letters relating to the Alexander family of Princeton, N.J., including autograph letters collected by them.

Consists of manuscripts, correspondence, drawings, and other material of the author, journalist, and Princeton graduate (Class of 1905) Samuel Duff McCoy (1882-1964).

Mildred Gilman Wohlforth was an American journalist, newspaper reporter, and novelist. Her papers include over 600 letters from friends, family, and literary associates, along with autograph and typed manuscripts for several unpublished novels. Also present are selected papers of her husband, Robert Wohlforth, a journalist, business analyst, and author.

Juan José Saer was an Argentine novelist, poet, and literary scholar. This collection contains his notebooks, notes, and drafts of essays, interviews, novels, poetry, and short stories. Also includes photographs of Saer and the city of Santa Fe, Argentina.

American art historian Charles Rufus Morey (1877-1955) served as professor in the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University from 1918-1945 and as chairman from 1924-1945. The collection includes Morey's drafts for catalogues, mainly at the Museo Sacro and Museo Cristiano; photographs; professional papers, lecture and course notes; and drafts, extracts and contents of vertical files.

Consists of writings, correspondence, and miscellanea of the American novelist, playwright, screenwriter and biographer Budd Schulberg (1914-2009 ).

The Robert H. Taylor Collection consists of over 4,000 3,300 manuscripts illustrating in their wide range the scope of English literature from the fourteenth century to the 1940s. This finding aid focuses on the modern manuscripts, both bound and unbound, in the collection, which is designated "RTC01" within the Manuscripts Division of the Special Collections Department of the Princeton University Library.

The collection consists of correspondence and documents collected by C. P. G. Fuller relating to Aaron Burr (1756-1836), vice president of the United States under Jefferson.

Consists of 170 albumen prints of Native Americans and frontiersmen taken by Julian Scott in 1890 for the 11th United States Census with a No. 2 Kodak camera, with accompanying documentation.

Achilleas Antoniades (1947-) is a career diplomat who served as Ambassador for the Republic of Cyprus to the Czech Republic from 2007 to 2009. The files consist of his documents, notes, minutes of meetings, analytical reports, and maps, regarding the political situation in Cyprus from the late 1950s through 2009.

The Records of Colonial Tlalpujahua (Michoacán, Mexico) consists of papers pertaining to the Convento de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, as well as miscellaneous papers that document matrimonial and criminal legal cases, land transactions in Tlalpujahua and Toluca, and genealogical information compiled by Austacio Rulfo. Additional papers to the collection include documents, accounts, religious petitions, assorted documents, and correspondence, many pertaining to the Benavides family.

The Giōrgos Vakalo Papers consists primarily of papers by and relating to the Greek painter and stage designer George Vakalo (1902-1991). Included are autograph and typed manuscripts of Vakalo's notes, talks, articles, interviews, TV or radio productions, artwork, as well as his correspondence, notebooks, photographs, and printed matter, such as exhibition art catalogs, magazines, and clippings. Of particular importance are the hundreds pieces of his artwork in a variety of media (ink, pencil, watercolor, conté crayon, engravings) and on a variety of supports (paper, carton, and canvas).

This collection consists of correspondence, writings (poetry and prose), notebooks, photographs, and printed materials.

Consists of material relating to the British-born, American author Frances Hodgson Burnett (FHB), collected by her younger son, Vivian Burnett (VB), including manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and artwork.

Consists of the personal and literary papers of Mexican writer, translator, and diplomat Sergio Pitol.

George Augustus Sala was a nineteenth-century English journalist, artist, book illustrator, traveler, humorist, and novelist. The collection contains approximately 300 letters written to Sala by about 200 different people over the course of 40 years. Among the correspondents are prominent authors, journalists, artists, nobility, philanthropists, and other notables.

Consists of diaries, notebooks, manuscripts, correspondence, and scrapbooks of American diplomat and novelist Paul Hyde Bonner.

The Nancy Crawshaw Papers contains the correspondence, photographs, and writings of Nancy Crawshaw, as well as copies of her published work. Her writings include work on her book The Cyprus Revolt (1978), lectures, broadcasts and articles from her career as a journalist, and her notes and other writings.

The Gordon Merrick Papers consist primarily of drafts of the manuscripts of Merrick's novels, written over a thirty-nine year period, from the late 1940s ( The Strumpet Wind, 1947) to the mid-1980s ( Measure of Madness, 1986). Also present is his business and financial correspondence with agents, publishers, and banks over a twenty-one year period, from 1967 until his death in 1988. In addition there is a clipping file which dates back to Merrick's first experiences as an actor in the 1930s, as well as photographs taken for publicity as well as for Merrick's personal collection.

Form was an international magazine focused on concrete poetry and kinetic art. Three Cambridge-educated academics, Philip Steadman, Mike Weaver, and Stephen Bann, edited the magazine and produced ten issues from 1966 to 1969. The collection includes extensive correspondence between editors, subscribers, and contributors, along with editorial, financial, and administrative files spanning the entire existence of the magazine.
