Module C – Texts and Society Related texts

Describe the cultural, socio-economic background of the protagonist i.e. the world in which he/she lives. What are the values of the social world of the protagonist and how are these shown? Choose a couple of scenes or key episodes depending on the text type you are studying and outline how this world is conveyed to the responder. Think of how the mis-en-scene of the Everington is established and the attitudes to ballet in Billy Elliot. How is this done in your related text? Look at the use of colour, camera, language, dialogue, sound or language techniques in written texts. How is the individual different in attitudes or aspirations from the surrounding cultural world? Trace the individual’s transition ‘into the world’ by selecting key scenes or events or interactions with people, and analysing HOW these are used to show growth and change.

Include the following: Any difficulties or opposition she/he faces? Barriers may be shown through symbolism or motifs ( symbols which occur though the whole text) as we saw in Billy Elliot with ‘the door’ motif.

How are the expectations of the dominant culture being challenged by the protagonist’s desires or actions? What opportunities are given to the protagonist? Are there any key people who help or hinder the transition?

Remember write the techniques used and quotations with you analysis.

Is the individual successful in making the transition ‘into the world’? Explain with evidence. How is this shown in the text through film or language techniques? A rich related text should be able to meet all the elements of ‘into the world’ we have studied. For the purpose of this module you need to be able to compare and contrast your texts, making links, not just in content, but in ideas and techniques used.

1. In you English book list all the common elements of your three texts, including the prescribed text ‘Billy Elliot’ and then all the points of contrast. The genre of your texts will also provide points of contrast, which is why we select different text types to study. Use sub-headings- Content

2. How does the text type affect the potential audience of the text?

3. How does each text reflect the context in which is written? The context is the social, historical, economic setting of the text. Think about contemporary culture and how films reflect our views and social attitudes. For example, in ‘Billy Elliot’ Michael is exploring alternate sexuality. The director portrays this favourably because current social views are changing in relation to the acceptance of homosexuality. What other attitudes are evident in your texts?
