Scope and Contents
The Rufus B. Sage Papers include correspondence of Rufus B. Sage's
grandfather Elisha Sage, his father Rufus Sage, and other members of the
family, concerning the family's personal affairs and life in Connecticut,
1789-1828. In addition, the collection consists of letters and papers of
Rufus B. Sage about his life in Ohio, his travels in the West and the
publication of his book, Scenes in the Rocky Mountains, and in Oregon,
California, New Mexico, Texas, and the Grand Prairies.
One of the original poems in the collection, "Night on the Prairie," is
printed in Scenes in the Rocky Mountains.
The collection consists of 108 letters and papers, 268 pages in all.

Rufus B. Sage, 1817-1893
Rufus B. Sage left his home in Upper Middletown, Connecticut, in 1836 for Marietta, Ohio, where his sister Jerusha Sage Gear, lived. Except for the winter of 1837-38 when he was in West Virginia and made a voyage down the Ohio and Mississippi to Natchez and Fort Gibson, Sage spent most of the period between 1836 and 1840 in Marietta, Circleville, and Columbus, Ohio, where he engaged in the printing and newspaper business. In 1840, he decided to go to the Rocky Mountains and Oregon, and travelled with some friends to Independence, Missouri, to join a fur-trading party. The party left Independence on September 2, 1841, spent the winter in the mountains, returned to Independence, and went west again in 1842. By 1844, Sage was back in Ohio, editing The Whig Battering-Ram from August 9 to October 25 and preparing to write an account of his travels, which was published by Carey & Hart of Philadelphia in 1846 with the following title: Scenes in the Rocky Mountains, and in Oregon, California, New Mexico, Texas, and the Grand Prairies.
Processing Information
Collections are processed to a variety of levels, depending on the work necessary to make them usable, their perceived research value, the availability of staff, competing priorities, and whether or not further accruals are expected. The library attempts to provide a basic level of preservation and access for all collections [as they are acquired], and does more extensive processing of higher priority collections as time and resources permit.
This finding aid, created before the advent of computer-generated files, has been converted into a ASCII data file by means of scanning and Optical Character Recognition software. While attempts have been made to retain the complete information from the original document a number of format changes have been made to present the structure of this archive in accordance with current practice.
This finding aid may be updated periodically to account for new acquisitions to the collection and/or revisions in arrangement and description.

Access Information
The Beinecke Library is open to all Yale University students and faculty, and visiting researchers whose work requires use of its special collections. You will need to bring appropriate photo ID the first time you register. Beinecke is a non-circulating, closed stack library. Paging is done by library staff during business hours. You can request collection material online at least two business days in advance of your visit, using the request links in Archives at Yale.
