AbstractAbstract
[en] Ego resiliency and ego control, measured when subjects were 3 or 4 years old, were related to expectation of war, concern for the future, and activism in response to the threat of nuclear war, measured when subjects were 18 years old. Data from 92 participants in a longitudinal study of ego and cognitive development conducted by Jeanne and Jack Block at the University of California, Berkeley were used to test hypotheses. Assessments with the California Child Q-set, composited across multiple independent observers, provide measures of ego resiliency and ego control. Adolescent interviews regarding the perception of likelihood of nuclear war, how this affects their future, and their antinuclear and general political activism were scaled and rated. Early ego resiliency and ego under control were hypothesized to account for the variance in adolescent nuclear responses and activism. The only significant longitudinal relationships were in the female sample, where ego under control was found to be a significant predictor of both general political activism (p<.01) and ideas of the future being affected by the nuclear threat (p<.05). Among males, the relationship between early ego resiliency and adolescent antinuclear activism approached significance (p<.10). Adolescent personality was significantly related to several measures of nuclear response. In girls, adolescent ego under control related to perception of likelihood of nuclear war (p<.05) and antinuclear activism (p<.05), and the interaction of ego resiliency and ego under control predicted general political activism (p<.0005). In boys, adolescent ego resiliency correlated with antinuclear activism (p<.05). These findings were discussed in terms of antecedent parenting styles, and conceptual links were drawn between children's ego resiliency and security of attachment, perspective taking, and moral development

Measurement of dose-area product in diagnostic radiology as a method of assessing the radiation exposure. (Results, experience, proposals for improvement, recommendations relating to radiological protection). Report of an expert meeting1995
AbstractAbstract
[en] The dose-area product is a mostly useful and easily measured quantity for the determination of doses to patients in diagnostic radiology. The measuring devices so far available for these purposes can, in all, be regarded as rather satisfactory and have, apart form very isolated cases, no pronounced effects on the mode of operation of X-ray systems. More recently developed X-ray systems featuring the necessary facilities offer the possibility of an alternative approach, in which the dose-area product is determined from the generator exposure data. This innovative method, which is based on the software alone, has a number of advantages and permits to obtain information not only on the dose-area product but also on basic individual factors like incidence dose and field size. Another asset here is that organ dose determinations can be carried out, if required. (orig./VHE)

(orig./VHE)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] The final discussion of a group of experts on dose-area product measurements for patient dose assessment in diagnostic radiology, Institute for Radiation Protection, Research Centre for Environment and Health (GSF), November 16 and 17, 1992 led to the following conclusions: The dose-area product provides a fairly reliable measure of doses to patients in diagnostic radiology. For the assessment of body doses it is, however, necessary that additional data are obtained. The measurement of the dose-area product is particularly suitable to achieve an optimum degree of safety for radiological examinations. The measurement of the dose-area product is also a method for the continuous quality assurance of all types of X-ray equipment as well as the follow-up and analysis of trends. Constancy examinations of X-ray equipments are possible, if the measurements are made for fields of a uniform size. (orig./VHE)

(orig./VHE)Original Title

AbstractAbstract
[en] The cumulative somatic dose index (SDI) for a number of diagnostic X ray examinations was made for a 60 year old male. The history of diagnostic X ray exposure for this patient from 1957 to 1983 showed 29 diagnostic X ray examinations including more than 100 films and 15 minutes of fluoroscopy. The total cumulative SDI to this patient was 214 mGy (about 21 rad). More than half this dose, 142 mGy, was contributed from upper GI and barium enema examinations which used fluoroscopy, with 88 mGy from the fluoroscopy alone. Using the recently revised risk coefficient for fatal cancer following whole-body irradiation of adult workers recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection in 1990, the authors estimate a 0.9% cancer morality risk to this patient resulting from the 29 diagnostic X ray examinations. AbstractAbstract
[en] With digital multilayer tomography a sequence of projection images is recorded by an image intensifier television system and stored as digital data during a linear run of a layer sequence. Using this data record, tomograms of the examined body region can be computed for any layer thickness by shifts and superimposition of the single projections later at a digital workstation. The qualities of digital and conventional tomograms are basically comparable. A drawback of digital tomography is its lower local resolution (512 x 512 image matrix), advantages are a lower radiation exposure, a shorter patient examination time, and the facilities of digital image processing (later processing, archive setup, transmission). AbstractAbstract
[en] Using Linden's functional scheme as a theoretical reference framework, we define a matrix of component for clinical and field applications in the acoustic diagnostic process and correlations with audiologic, learning and behavioral problems. It is expected that the model effectively contributes to classify and provide a greater knowledge about this multidisciplinary problem. Although the exact nature of this component is at present a matter to be defined, its correlation can be hypothetically established. Applying this descriptive and integral approach in the diagnostic process it is possible if not to avoid, at least to decrease, the uncertainties and assure the proper solutions becoming a powerful tool applicable to environmental studies and/or social claims.
