It's easy to think of Joan Baez as the original long-haired folkie, but these days, with her silver pixie cut and a diamond twinkling in her tooth, there's a touch of the rock'n'roll pirate about her. It was a joy to talk to her about her first poetry collection, her lifelong dedication to nonviolent protest, how she feels about her years with Bob Dylan coming to the big screen, her "odd couple" relationship with Steve Jobs and her dark sense of humour. Last night at the Jimmy Buffett tribute show: Woody Harrelson joked about smoking a joint with him on the roof of the Vatican, Harrison Ford reminisced about being inspired to get his ear pierced, Jane Fonda claimed it was actually *her* who smoked a joint with him at the Vatican, Brandi Carlile made "Come Monday" swoon, Mac McAnally (and everyone else) roared "Cheeseburger in Paradise", Jackson Browne sang "He Went To Paris" (Dylan's fave), Snoop did "Gin and Juice" with the Coral Reefer Band, Pitbull and Jon Bon Jovi teamed up(!) for a song called "Thank God and Jimmy Buffett"(!!), Sheryl Crow had fun with "Fins", The Eagles were The Eagles, Paul McCartney got emotional singing "Let It Be", as he had at Jimmy's bedside, and then reappeared with a giant margarita for the grand Last Waltz finale sing-along of "Margaritaville".
