Ioannes I Tzimisces (Graece Ἰωάννης Τζιμισκής) fuit Imperator Romanus Orientalis ab anno 969 usque ad mortem. Anno 924 natus (nomine familiali Curcuas, Κουρκούας), bello contra Arabes gesto, typhi causa Byzantio die 10 Ianuarii 976 mortuus est. Origine Armenius fuit et nepos e sorore Nicephori II; die 11 Decembris 969 Nicephorum necavit. Post breve spatium temporis Theodoram sororem Romani II nupsit.

Ioannes restaurationem Imperii Romani Orientalis appetivit. Primum prospere bellum contra Bulgares gessit (capto rege Borise II), deinde contra Arabes. Antiochia in Syria, quae circiter 300 annorum sub imperio Arabum erat, reexpugnata est, etiam anno 975 Emesa, Heliopolis in Libano, Damascus, Nazara, Acco et Caesarea Maritima.
