Proposal

History Of Saraiki This is the first web site about Saraiki language and culture on World Wide Web to promote Saraiki language and culture all across the world. Saraiki is the most widely spoken language in Pakistan and the first language of more than 40 million people in the subcontinent. Saraiki is the 61st largest language out of more than 6000 languages in the world. It has a very rich culture and is the representative language of Sindh Valley Civilization. The main Saraiki speaking areas are Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Dera Ismail Khan and most parts of Sargodha division. Saraiki is also spoken widely in Sindh and Baluchistan provinces of Pakistan. It has many sweet dialects and is considered as the language of love.

Saraiki is the language of love and literature. Rich cultural context and diversity of expression in the language have enabled Saraiki poets and prose writers to produce literature masterpieces. Saraiki poetry has different themes. Love for beloved and love for land can be identified as major ones. Sufi poets have used this language not only to speak to people but also to God. Saraiki people have a natural flair for poetry and literature. Most of the Saraiki literature is unrecorded for the reason that no formal patronage has been provided to poets and writers. Before the inception of Pakistan, Saraiki was written in Devnagri script and converting to Arabic/ Persian script resulted in the loss of a substantial part of literature.

During last two centuries, Saraiki motherland has produced a lot of legendary poets. Khawaja Ghulam Farid, Sachal Sarmast and Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai are some of famous Saraiki poets which are known world wide for their universal message of love.

• Labelling Saraiki a language is controversial. Let us see what your favourite sources say. "the Punjabis claim that Siraiki is a dialect of Punjabi source Rahman 1995. Language Claim continues to be disputed by many Punjabi speakers who regard it as a dialect of Punjabi" source Lewis, Simons & Fennig 2016 Historically It is considered a dialect of Panjabi."; source Shackle 2003. Even most of Saraiki Potwari and Hindko claim themselves as Punjabi. In last Census 75% of Punjab population opted itselfs Punjabi despite Saraiki, Potwari and Hindko tick options. Punjab province population is 56% of the Pakistan. So by default majority of Pakistani see Saraiki as dialect of Punjabi. Left aside Punjabis or Pakistani or Saraiki. Even Linguists George Cardona put it under Punjabi. Grierson puts it under Western Punjabi. Masica 1991 used Variety of Lahnda (western Punjabi).

Actually Cardona has a list of Indic languages and the dialects that comprise them, which would be useful for all articles on indo aryan languages and being a local person I 100% agree with him because this list is truly based on the principle that the term 'language' has to be distinguished from the term 'dialect' only on the basis of mutual intangibility. I am listing them as under Punjabi= 129 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian and Pakistani Punjab including Majhi, Doabi, Hindko, Dogri, Potwari and Saraiki. Sindhi= 20 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Pakistani Sindh (Lari, Vicholi, Sureli and Lasi) and Kachhi of North Gujrat. Marathi= 75 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian State Maharashter excluding Khandeshi. Gujrati= 45 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian State Gujrat excluding Bhilli. Hindi =420 Million Speakers (2001) comprising dialects of Indian States of Dehli,UP, Haryana, Rajhastan, Bihar, CP and Chatisgarh Bangala= 230 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian State Bengal and Bangladesh. Oriya= 34 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian State Orrisa. Assamees= 17 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian State Assam. Nepali= 15 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Nepal. Sinhali= 14 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Sri lanka excluding Tamil. Konkani= 2 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian State Goa. Kashmiri= 5 Million Speakers (2001) comprising all dialects of Indian occupied Disputed Kashmir Valley. I took a look at Cardona and though his entire discussion of Saraiki (he spells it Siraiki) is subsumed under Punjabi, he does seem to treat Saraiki differently from other dialects. My impression is that, in modern Pakistan, Saraiki is considered to be a variant of Punjabi.Like the Hindization of North Indian languages, there is a parallel Punjabization of languages in the Punjab region of Pakistan.
