Madougushi Dahliya wa Utsumukanai

After dying of overwork in Japan, Dahlia is reborn into a world filled with magic. Raised by a master of magical toolmaking, she develops a passion for the craft and becomes engaged to her father's apprentice. Before her father can see her wed, however, he suddenly passes away. As if this weren't enough, on the day before their wedding, her fiancé announces that he's in love—but not with her!

Dahlia finally realizes she needs to live for herself. She vows to be her own woman from now on and devote herself to her craft, even if it's not quite the quiet life she was hoping for! From a chance encounter with a knight to starting her own company, there are challenges aplenty on the horizon. But this young craftswoman is no longer a shrinking violet—she's Dahlia, and she's ready to bloom.

Why is the rating of this anime so low?? This is one of the most refreshing shows I've seen in a while, the characters actually act normal and in a realistic way, there's no forced romance or weird tropes, only good vibes. If you're put off by the reincarnation thing, it's not brought up at all during the show, so I do agree it could've been omitted to begin with but maybe the author wanted more traction for it, who am I to judge. I think this deserves at least a 7.3, there's not a single bad thing about it in my eyes, and if ... you like shoujo it does go in that direction but no romance as of ep 6. It's super cute and fun imo, I love waiting for new episodes and getting cozy with a drink and snack while watching this. Total hidden gem of this summer.

Mixed Feelings

Preliminary (5/12 eps)

This review is through episode 5.

Here's the thing. My review is mixed because thus far this anime is the embodiment of "ambivalence" for me. The stuff I like I really like, the stuff I dislike almost made me bail an episode in. But the bad for me is almost entirely in animation and art quality and consistency, and that seems to have been confined to the earlier episodes. The story and characters are great so far. And I think that's more important. Or at least it outweighs the distracting art.

Let's start with the good. Girl/woman grows up as what's basically an ... inventor/engineer who uses magic items/stones to make things work. She was really close to her dad, who was a top notch version of that profession, and she has the potential to be on the same level. She's basically a nicer, more humble, and less geeky version of Lucca Ashtear from Chrono Trigger. She gets engaged to the heir to a trading company who is working as a senior apprentice to her father, which is business marriage proposed by her father and his father, though at least at first the guy seems ok enough. I won't spoil the rest.

She's a good character thus far. A bit of a mix between Snow White with the Red Hair and Myne/Main from Ascendance of a Bookworm, and some unique elements as well. The side characters are good as well, including the fiance, and her father. I'm getting the feeling her father is going to be this show's version of the grandfather from Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, or Reiko from Natsume's Book of Friends. If you know what I mean, then you know what I mean.

The writing seems pretty solid, in that people seem to behave like people. Arranged marriages for business preservation instead of love were a thing, and I'm glad it was treated as "normal." People don't seem to under- or over-react. Nobody is comically evil or overly dumb or way too smart. Yeah some things may play out a bit too conveniently, but the story does need to happen, so that's fine.

After 5 episodes, I'm looking forward to more story. I want to see where it's going.

The music/sound was barely noticeable (it was there, just nothing outstanding or bad), so that's neither a plus nor a minus.

So what's my issue?

The art and animation in the first couple of episodes were just bad. Noticeably. I'm not expecting everything to be Demon Slayer, but some of the contrast between the background and the characters in the foreground was so stark that it was distracting. Some basic scenes of someone drinking from a cup or mug (I forget which) lasted a few seconds and was just a still image. Like they didn't even move the line a bit that was the mouth during any of the frames, so it felt like eternity. And some of the images just felt very low-detail. I mean I get if you're saving it up for huge battle scenes or something, but that's not really this kind of show. It did seem to get better as the episodes went on, so I'm starting to wonder there was an actual reason the first couple weren't as good as the later ones.

This isn't to say that all the art is bad, however. The character designs are good. And overall I like the backgrounds and the designs of the buildings and the city. The main character's home especially. It's a small cylindrical tower, which just looks nice. But strangely this serves to contrast even more when things aren't working. Like if you take two nice images and layer them on top of each other but don't do a good enough job at integrating them together, the fact that both images are nice by themselves almost makes the fact that they're artificially stuck together all the more jarring.

In all honestly this started off being the second show (after Irregular at Magic High School) that I was going to get through Episode 3 just to write a review, but this show really captured my interest so I'll be sticking with it for the rest of the season. Even if the art and animation regresses again, the writing is worth sticking around for.

TLDR

This is NOT an Isekai and slice of life that talk about magic tools and inventions.
This is a shoujo and romance anime.


There are some basic things wrong, in this anime. That’s what i correlated on the 4 episodes i've seen, literally 1/3 of the anime.

Just follow me, my argumentations are pretty easy to understand.

... - We start with the title: “Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools”, what do you understand reading it? What do you feel and imagine reading the title?
At first glance, there is someone, probably a Girl from the name, she is on her best form, that’s why she is blooming; she’s probably a craftsman that makes magic tool, and maybe she is blooming because she had a bad experience, and she’s starting fresh new.
So, we know that’s basically someone that craft magic tools, right? So you would expect an anime where there is a girl that craft magic tool.

- If we study the info about the anime, we know it’s a fantasy, a slice of life and an isekai.
So, this girl is probably reincarnated, in a fantasy environment, where she crafts magic tools and the anime is about her crafting, and so i would expect seeing like the process of crafting, getting idea for things, making things, maybe some economy parts too, etc.

Do you know what is an isekai? I don’t want to quote the all Wiki article, but what make sense to be an isekai in the end, is the fact that the person that got reincarnated/move to the new word, keep the memory of itself and remember almost everything of what append.

So, you have the base, now i would analyse the 4 episodes i see:

- The anime start with the scene of a woman, doing spreadsheet and then having a nap on the keyboard (probably dead, i know that spreadsheet can be mortal). Then the anime start with the “new world part”. The rest of the first episode is related to the protagonist, we would see her from child to adult.
The isekai part, it’s 30 second, and there is no other mention all along the other 3 episodes and i’m sure that’s all i would see, considering we have already seen her grow to an adult and don’t remember anything.

What they think? That adding the “Isekai” tag to an anime, make it more popular?
They could have removed the first 30 second, and wouldn’t have matter anything to the anime, and its story. Yes, there is a situation where the girl “invent” something not available on the new words, a hair dryer, wow, that’s it? Or the raincoat? If this is the isekai related part, that she’s not an inventor at all, copying things that already exist, that would break the all story even more!

- Then we have the all story itself, i told you before, that from the title, you would imagine an anime about crafting and invention, right?
Wrong, that’s a Shoujo, it talks about romance. The anime is all centre to the woman protagonist, her personal relationship, gossip with friends and people around her, about the romance situation, some bad write drama, be betrayed and other love and romance. Do you think i would watch it, knowing it was a romance anime? NO.

All 4 episodes are related to romance situation, with a small part on the first episode, related to inventions. That’s it, there is no “Magical tool” and the fresh start too is related to a new romance start. That’s the classic romance anime where the protagonist get her first bad experience, and then she knows the men of her life. Done.

I think a better title for this anime is: “Dahlia in Love”. A title like that, surely wouldn’t attract people like me, that would have love, to watch a slice of life about craftsmanship, and invention.


In the end, after having a wrong title and genres, where even the author don’t know what he/she is writing; the anime is generally mediocre, with basic art and animation, some ok CGI for the flame/magic animation, general light and some strange bubble you see in the background sometimes. The story and trama is pretty basic and obvious, with the second episode we can already know how the anime would finish, considering it’s a pretty standard romance story. The script is poor, but in line with a basic romance story. Character development is pretty bad, starting from how the protagonist react to some bad romance act in the first 2-3 episode with her fiancé, and after how everything develops. Of course there is almost no growth from the main character, about magic tool and craftsmanship in general.

That’s a bad anime, and it feels like the story too is probably bad written, not just a bad transposition. I would finish it, and i would probably lower the vote to 4.
Personally, i’m not impressed, that’s pretty standard, the average anime quality in the last 7/8 years, has dropped a lot, finding good show in new seasons it’s pretty rare, without talking about sequel of other anime.

Don’t waste your time, avoid this anime.
