FLCL

Naota Nandaba is an ordinary sixth grader living in a city where nothing amazing ever seems to happen. After his brother Tasuku leaves town to play baseball in America, Naota takes it upon himself to look after everything Tasuku left behind—from his top bunk bed to his ex-girlfriend Mamimi Samejima, who hasn't stopped clinging to Naota since Tasuku left.

Little does Naota know, however, that his mundane existence is on the verge of being changed forever: enter Haruko Haruhara, a Vespa-riding, bass guitar-wielding, pink-haired psychopath whose first encounter with Naota leaves him with tire tracks on his back and a giant horn on his head. Though all he wants is some peace and quiet, when Haruko takes up residence at his parents' home, Naota finds himself dragged into the heart of the greatest battle for supremacy that Earth—and quite possibly the entire universe—has ever seen.

It's just peak, It's so wild that I don't think this review will do it justice.

It follows Naota, a normal Japanese 6th grader whose older brother left for the USA to pursue baseball, leaving behind his ex-girlfriend Mamimi. One day, he gets hit by a girl on a Yellow Vespa who wields a Bass Guitar and calls herself Haruko. After they meet, Naota's world turns upside down as the strange never stops happening.

The show is hilarious and put a huge goofy smile on my face the first time I watched it.

The anime has an amazing art style, you can easily identify characters just by their ... physical characteristics.

The show has some Panty shots, and some horny humor, but it doesn't happen too much for it to be a massive problem.

Since it's only a 6 episode OVA, the pacing may be too fast for some people, who might get confused about what's happening, but that hasn't affected me.

Overall, FLCL is peak

Mixed Feelings

I'm kind of dumb. And the few brain cells I have are turned off when I watch anime so they can atrophy further. My gray matter is so dysfunctional that, after I finished the show and scoured the Internet for the FLCL "SparkNotes" (I sifted through walls of text on Reddit), even the barebones observations regarding the overarching themes of the story flew over my head.

Needless to say, I didn't particularly enjoy the show. This is a result of its abstractness and my deficient mental capacities when consuming media, not a jab at the anime itself when it comes to the direction and OST. ... Since I haven't the words to describe it, I will just say that personally, it felt like watching Interstellar or Oppenheimer in the sense that I felt very stimulated but didn't understand what was going on.

As such, the general consensus is that you have to rewatch it once (or twice, or thrice...) to appreciate its beauty. I, uh, have no keen desire to do that, since being able to decipher what occurs as it flashes across my irises is pretty important to me - it gets my dopamine receptors into motion! But I won't deny that there is beauty hidden in the show; there's a 5700 word analysis on Reddit. That's almost nine Common App essays!

The music and animation is great. If the allure of symbolism and hidden meanings veiled behind the anime attracts you, you should definitely watch it! Even if you have a monkey brain like me, it's just a bit over two hours of your life. You might like it. Or you might not, like me. No shame in that.

To describe this anime to any sane person would make it seem like you’re high on crack, acid, dmt and horse tranquilizers all at once . The plot is either non existent or so dumb it makes slapstick comedy look like Shakespeare. The writing team must have been the people behind the infinite monkey theory trying to write out a masterpiece. It makes no sense, the comedy doesn’t land, the writing is fluctuates between terrible and actively gives you an aneurism. I can’t complain about the art style the visuals are fine and unique. For it being a comedy anime and comedy being subjective I ... understand some may find this funny but I legitimately don’t think anyone with an iq above room temperature could understand this or even enjoy it. This might be the original brain rot content. I watched the entirety of the show in one sitting and with each episode I felt brain cells dying. The description of the show is coherent, the show itself is not. Op and Ed are pretty good songs though. Long story short either I’m missing something or it’s dog shit
