Trigun Stampede

On the planet Noman's Land, reporters Meryl Stryfe and Roberto De Niro traverse the desert in search of the infamous outlaw Vash the Stampede. But the man they find near the desolate town of Jeneora Rock is a far cry from the lethal terrorist they expect. In reality, Vash is a passive and carefree drifter; he is a proponent of peace, beloved by the residents of the town. His inaccurate reputation actually stems from the widespread atrocities committed by his twin brother Knives Millions. Still, Vash is dubbed "The Humanoid Typhoon'' due to the tendency for violent chaos to follow in his wake.

Chaos soon arrives in the form of bounty hunters seeking the high price on Vash's head, and their violent pursuit poses great danger to the town and its precious power plant. Thanks to his gunslinging prowess, Vash is able to resist most of these nefarious forces. Yet he must soon face off against the ultimate evil: the unstoppable destructive power of his malevolent brother.

I watched Stampede and then the original afterwards. I’m probably in the minority when I say this, but I much prefer Stampede. It cuts out all the filler - the original to me felt like it had no plot and was just an episodic case of the week with all the meat in the finale. Which is fine if that’s what you’re into. It’s not my cup of tea.

I normally hate CG animation but Studio Orange did such a good job with this. Such a good job, I loved the art style so much it even made me watch their other series, Houseki no ... Kuni (also amazing). The backgrounds were gorgeous and did the Wild West feel justice. I didn’t mind the redesigns of the characters. This show was branded as something new and not a remake so a rebrand of the characters feels like a good move to separate it from the original (though changing Wolfwood’s nose feels like a crime). This is sort of set up as a prequel to the events that happen in the original. It's much darker than the original (excellent choice studio orange).

As a sci-fi lover, this hit just right. I’ve been on a Dune hyperfixation so I’m happy to see more desert planet sci-fi series. While this rendition of Trigun isn’t finished, this series is a favorite of mine. Studio Orange took an okay series and turned it into something great (don’t kill me for saying that). The animation and plot in the second half are top tier - anybody who dropped before that is sorely missing out.

Also side note the soundtrack is out of this world. Millions Knives vocal version gives a better high than any drug ever could.

Mixed Feelings

I enjoyed this a lot as someone who hasn't seen the original. But I can imagine that og fans might be disappointed, since apparently a lot of things have been changed. I can't be disappointed since I have no idea what the story is missing. But I have to admit that it was a little fast paced, and a little confusing at times (i didnt really understand why some of the people were following wolfwood? I think I missed something...)

I've also seen many people call the cgi bad?? I disagree as someone who has seen a lot of cgi shows and movies. The cgi was ... amazing compared to some other stuff i've seen (cough, aot s4, cough). The action scenes were fluid and natural, and the camera movements topped them off. The characters don't look detached from their surroundings (like the titans in aot s4💀).

Man, I totally slagged this when it first came out. I felt they completely dishonored the original, which is still my #2 series of all time. Nothing was right with it, and frankly, I still think the first 7 episodes are complete trash. They ruined all the original characters, totally deleted one that was essential, and added another that was little more than a drunken appendix. The writing is so full of plot holes and deus ex machina, it would be laughable, if it wasn't so horrific. They destroyed the mystery of the original in the first ep. And that 3D CGI rendered animation looked ... like they stole it from RWBY. I'm sure Oum was rolling over in his grave.

I almost didn't make three and out. I almost didn't make 6 and out. But through some perverse form of masochism, I kept watching. Wondering just how abysmal this was going to be.

Then, suddenly, in ep 8, the animators pulled their heads from their rectums, and started doing things right. Don't get me wrong. The characters were still a mess. The art work was still cliche as hell. The writing was still kind of janky. But in an almost too late to redeem itself last gasp, the animation became montrously good. The last episode of the season was phenominal. One of the best examples of the use of CGI I have ever seen.

So the stampede was ever so slightly averted. Still, it was only enough to keep the cattle from heading over the cliff. If I was grading, the whole series only ends up at 68/100; a D+. And that's AFTER the animation redemption, otherwise it would have been a total F failure, with a rank close to 3. You might want to watch this. But keep a barf bag handy. You might just need it.
