Alien 9

Alien 9 is like a compact version of evangelion.
Both deal with characters that are stuck with a duty they aren't comfortable doing, their own insecurities keep them from performing well under pressure.
The premise is also similar, a city/school are being invaded by extraterrestrial forces.
Emotionally unstable kids forced to fight "aliens" for mysterious reasons.
Throughout the story, the characters do not only fight the unknown creatures but they also fight their own emotions and have to surpass various obstacles and limitations. Teamwork is also a key to beat the creatures. Alien 9 is an incomplete work just like EVANGELION, however, the latter got a movie that completes the anime and answers all the questions.

Both Protagonists has almost the same personality
Starts out fine and generic in the early episodes, gets darker at the later episodes
Aliens. Both of them have it.
And, The last episodes of NGE and Alien 9 are both dissapointing for the viewers XD (not counting the End of Evangelion)
Both have reluctant mcs with this innocence to them caught up into alot of strange events and the kind of horrors the characters have to deal with in this unusual scenario too.

The Earth gets invaded by aliens and the MCs are forced to fight them. They don't want to fight them, as it causes a lot of pain and suffering, but they don't have an option. Both are deep, psychological shows with dark themes and imagery, diving deep into the characters state and personality. They also have great animation and a really cool aesthetic, though their art direction is certainly different.
They're both existencial horror shows about kids dealing with otherwordly beings, and lots, lots lots of mental anguish. Shinji and Yuri are very similar.
Both have revolved around the struggles of growing up. Shinji and Yuri are also somewhat similar.

trio (mostly trio for evangelion) of children fight against extraterrestrial creatures. one child is a genius (kasumi/asuka), another is forced to fight even though they don't want to (yuri/shinji), and the last one is indepentdent & has a blue motif (kumi/rei). also includes a fishy science organizer & organization (chisa/gendo).
