Calamagrostis x gracilescens was found in Northwest Overijssel in 1982 together with its parents C. stricta and C. canescens in more or less extensively grazed or mowed vegetation on weakly acid wet peat soils. The populations are formed by rather tall plants with large anthers; in other respects they are more or less intermediate between the parents species; they have fertile pollen and fruits.
