At NCAR, we're serious about our science, which means we're equally serious about diversity.
That's because we understand that diverse perspectives are critical for finding solutions to the most difficult scientific problems. We also understand that to recruit and retain staff members from communities that have traditionally been underrepresented in our science, we need to foster an inclusive workplace that is welcoming to everyone, no matter their identity.
DEI efforts at our organization span both NCAR and UCAR, which manages the national center on behalf of the National Science Foundation. The UCAR Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion works to ensure our overall culture allows all employees to feel safe, respected, and empowered to do their best work, and they develop and implement our organization’s broad DEI policies and procedures.
NCAR’s DEI work supports and supplements initiatives at the UCAR level, with a particular emphasis on engaging minority-serving institutions (MSIs) to broaden participation in Earth system science. Our team is committed to ensuring that MSI faculty and students have access to NCAR facilities and instruments, as well as helping build research capacity at their home institutions. NCAR DEI also focuses on initiatives aimed at diversifying and retaining staff through intentional outreach, working to improve hiring procedures, and supporting hiring initiatives across NCAR labs.
