December 11, 2023: A better modal checkout experience

This release focuses primarily on improvements to the modal checkout experience.

Performance tweaks

The checkout experience should now be faster, as fewer assets load during the checkout, and the page generation was optimized.

Small change to the option to cover Stripe’s transaction fees during checkout

Back in early November, we released a feature that allows readers to opt into covering Stripe’s transaction fees for donations at the point of checkout.

The placement for that checkbox has moved:

Modal checkout fixes

  • Ensure the reCAPTCHA v3 integration does not send a duplicate token when re-attempting to place an order after a form validation error
  • Prevent the initial render of the “order review” table while the modal checkout is loading

New targeting option for Newspack Ads

Also as part of this release, a new custom targeting key-value is available for publishers using Google Ad Manager. If you manage multiple sites using a single Google Ad Manager account, you will now be able to target your ads to ‘site’. You can always append /?googfc to any URL to open the console and see the key-value targeting applied to the ad units on your site.

The key is created with the type PREDEFINED, reportable type as CUSTOM_DIMENSION, and the site URL is automatically added as a value. This allows you to run reports on revenue by site.

Important fix to Newspack Newsletters layouts

Since version 2.2.0, newsletter layout styles were not being applied to a newsletter. This has now been fixed and you should be able to save custom style parameters and CSS in your layouts to be replicated in newsletters!
