Art Talk: Micheline Ford on A Century of Quilts
Join Micheline Ford (Senior Conservator, Textiles) to learn about the conservation of quilts housed in the national collection. Micheline reveals hidden details discovered during conservation treatments and shows how the quilts are prepared for display and storage.
Micheline also highlights the materials and techniques used in these exceptional examples of nineteenth-and early twentieth-century quilts, made almost exclusively by women. The quilts in the exhibition demonstrate techniques including crazy quilting, hexagonal, log cabin and tumbling block piecing, embroidery and appliqué. Many reuse materials sourced from around the home, reflecting the social context in which the artists lived.
