Taxonomy

Erythrosuchidae was named by Watson (1917). It is not extant. Its type is Erythrosuchus.

It was synonymized subjectively with Proterosuchidae by Kuhn (1966).

It was assigned to Thecodontia by Watson (1917); to Parasuchia by Kuhn (1946); to Pseudosuchia by Haughton and Brink (1954); to Proterosuchia by Kuhn (1964); to Proterosuchia by Charig (1967), Charig and Reig (1970), Cruickshank (1972), Charig and Sues (1976), Cruickshank (1978) and Carroll (1988); to Archosauria by Benton (1985) and Benton (1990); to Erythrosuchia by Parrish (1993); and to Archosauriformes by Sereno (1991), Nesbitt (2011) and Ezcurra (2016).
