They start for the gold country. Tired and hopeless after a long tramp, they come upon the shack of Dan Shaw. The old miner takes them in, and trustingly shows them a bag of nuggets which, for many years, he has been gathering to buy a home in California. Andrews and Edna take heart. They start out anew upon their quest. Andrews dies. Edna, to support herself and baby, becomes a dance hall girl. Because she resents the insults of the patrons, she is fired by the manager. In despair, she happens again upon Dan Shaw. That night she steals from him the bag of nuggets. But her conscience constrains her next day to return them. Meanwhile, Dan has been planning to sacrifice his dream of a home in California for the sake of Edna and her child. Putting the nuggets in another bag, so that she may not recognize them as his, he places them on her doorstep with a note, purporting to come from an old friend of her husband's.
