When they return to the family roof-tree to ask forgiveness, Jenks meets them at the front door, drags Bess into the house and chases Tom off with a shotgun. Bess carries on so terribly that old Jenks finally relents and writes to Tom he is welcome to Bess if he will come and get her at once. Tom secretly concludes to take the old man's advice, but openly decides to teach him a lesson. He writes Jenks he had decided to remain single and that Bess can get a divorce. Old Jenks is simply stunned, and Beau gets immediately into action, demanding an explanation. Tom confides in her and she returns home seemingly better than ever, declaring that she has been "thrown down." Old man Jenks raves and rages louder than before, but to no avail. He sees Tom. and it only adds fuel to his fury. He finally returns home and tells Bess of the terrible situation. She pretends to be heartbroken. Driven to extreme measures, old Jenks "loosens" and finally goes out and buys a furnished cottage, hoping in this way to bring Tom about to reason. Thereupon he visits Tom, accompanied by Bess, and shows him the deed for the property. In spite of Tom's elation over the situation, he maintains a stolid indifference. Finally Old Jenks has exhausted entreaty and patience, and drags out a six-shooter, compelling Tom to accompany Bess to the cottage. When they arrive there, Tom experiences a great change of heart. He kisses Bess passionately and astonishes Old Jenks by fastening his arms around him. Somehow or other, Old Jenks learns of the trick, and is furious, but finally relents, for he finds that he has been outwitted and Tom is a much better man than he thought he was. So he gives him the deed to the property, and the young couple are happy forever after. Written by
