She was the first major country music performer to come out as lesbian. Wright grew up in a small Kansas town, where she started singing and taking piano lessons as a child. After graduating high school, Wright moved to Nashville, where she eventually signed with MCA and began producing hit songs. The Academy of Country Music awarded her Top New Female Vocalist in 1995, and Wright has since released seven studio albums. In 2010, Wright founded the Like Me Organization, a charity dedicated to supporting the LGBT community. In 2011, she married fellow LGBT rights advocate Lauren Blitzer, with whom she has two sons.
