Ultimately Lydia discovers his name and his secret and, helped by Ruby, makes him face up to his situation. Ruby also visits a village school to give the children their medicals; teacher Anton Karkik asks her for a date, which she declines, and she helps pupil Vijay, who is withdrawn and undersized for her age. This leads Ruby to a confrontation with his single mother and the discovery of an incident in Gabriel's past. Gabriel himself races against time to collect the serum to save a roguish snake-charmer bitten by one of his animals and almost fails, following a road accident, while Maggie decides that she wants to die in India.
