Known for his erratic behavior on the field, Dock Ellis, who played for the championed Pittsburgh Pirates, threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres 2-0 in 1970 under the influence of LSD. Joining the Yankees in 1976, Ellis helped lead the team to the 1976 World Series, and was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year. Years later, after his devotion to sober living, Ellis became a proud advocate for the rights of players and African Americans, and devoted the rest of his retired life to counseling drug addicts in treatment centers and prisons.
