The name means "a fuit o Aragats" (the heichest muntain o the Republic o Armenie). Durin the Arsacid Dynasty o the Kinrick o Armenie, the region wis pairt o the Ayrarat province. It wis ruled bi the Amatuni noble family wi its caipital at Oshakan.

The region is primarily inhabitit bi Armenians but an aa haulds a significant Yazidi Kurdish minority.
